QUESTION: What does the Bible mean when it says “In the abundance of wisdom there is an abundance of sorrows”? Is it not right to seek wisdom?
Ecclesiastes 1:17 “ And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit. 18 For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.
Ecclesiastes 1:17 “ And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.
18 For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.
ANSWER: If you read the whole of the first chapter, and the next, you will see that Solomon was describing how he worked hard to seek the things of the world, and his wisdom and all the work “which is done under heaven” (Ecclesiastes 1:13).
But he does not say that he was looking for heavenly things, no, and that is why you will see everywhere he ends up saying it is utter nonsense, everywhere, that is, the content of the book of Ecclesiastes describes the fate of all work and all human activities under the sun, and yes for at the very end of the book you will see that Solomon now gives an answer to the most important thing that a man should seek all the days of his life. (Read Ecclesiastes 12:13).
Now going back to that verse when he says “In the abundance of wisdom there is an abundance of sorrows, and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow” It does not mean heavenly wisdom or heavenly knowledge.. No!, because heavenly wisdom and heavenly knowledge are what make one have Peace and joy and peace of mind. To know Jesus who is the wisdom of God (according to 1 Corinthians 1:24), is the end of all suffering, you are forever free, there is no sorrow or grief. When you read the Bible (which is the Word of God) ), then you get the right knowledge of living on earth, and you open all the closed doors.
So the knowledge that is spoken of here is the worldly knowledge that we pursue, because, when a man has a great education, it is thought that it will give him true happiness in his heart, but the results show that is not true, Solomon got it and thought it would give him the happiness he was hoping for. but he found it to be in vain.
It is a common occurrence, scientists who stay up all night in laboratories, research and discover, a large percentage of their lives are not happy, because they are afraid of many things, if that happens, or what happens, their enemies make an atomic bomb like this one they make what will happen? What will be the effect of this drug or chemical in the next 10 years? They are worrying .. As their knowledge and wisdom increase their sorrows also increase…
So at the end of the day it becomes sadness upon sadness and sorrows upon sorrows and that is why the bible exhorts us, let us love to add knowledge to our God more than anywhere else because that is where we will find true lasting happiness and tranquility and lasting peace.
The Lord Jesus (who is the wisdom of God) says;
Matthew 11:28 “ Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
In the Lord Jesus there is true rest.
