Why is the gift of God eternal life?
If you take a moment to reflect deeply on the word eternal life, you will be amazed. Sometimes, you might even wonder how it is possible to live forever. If you ponder this deeply, you might feel like your mind hits a limit, because living without an end, living today, yet centuries pass, and you still continue to live…
A thousand years pass, and you keep living. A million years pass, and you still continue to live. A billion years pass, and you’re still living. A trillion years go by, and life hasn’t even started yet… You keep going, living without end.
Even after a quadrillion years (which is equivalent to a trillion times one thousand), you still continue. A quintillion, sextillion, septillion years go by, and life continues.
Think about how long that is. Today, after just 20 or 30 years, we feel like it’s been ages, and we call it “the old days.” Now imagine a million years—what would you even call it? Perhaps the “Stone Age,” or maybe you’d lose all memory of it.
But God, who is eternal and without end, has promised us this great gift—eternal life—as a free gift. Even if He gave us nothing else, this gift alone would be more than enough. It is an immeasurable gift, beyond words.
Romans 6:23
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Remember, God, who is limitless in time, has this eternal life plan for us, and it’s not going to be an idle existence. We won’t be living aimlessly, without purpose, wandering through endless days. No! Otherwise, eternal life would be unbearable.
Instead, every moment, every day will be filled with new and beautiful things. We will enjoy life forever. There will be no sickness, no aging, no pain, no suffering, and no worries. No scorching sun, no disability, no sorrow, no frustrations, and no debts. We will live in perfect peace, amazed at the glory of God and worshiping Him in unimaginable joy.
God has already calculated everything for our eternity. He knows exactly what will happen on any given day, even a billion years from now. Every event, every detail, He already knows. This is Jehovah, the eternal God, whose marvelous works we will never cease to marvel at.
And this is why God says:
Isaiah 55:8-9
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord.
“As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
This assures us that God’s plans for us are beyond our ability to comprehend, and they are far beyond our understanding. His ways are so high that we can’t even begin to grasp them. And this is why we must strive to ensure that we don’t miss out on the gift of eternal life. Because here on earth, we are not living real life. Seventy or eighty years is not life. We are simply being prepared for the real life that God has planned for us.
By contemplating this every day, we will gain the strength to not worry about what we might lose here on earth. We should not care about missing business opportunities for attending prayer services or giving up worldly things to worship and study God’s Word. We have our eyes set on the eternal life that God has prepared for us.
Even a worldly proverb says, “Do not forsake what you have for the passing opportunity.” This means we should not lose our eternal life for the temporary pleasures of this world. What good is it for a person to gain the whole world and lose their soul?
Matthew 16:26
“What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?”
Because the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life.
Now, this eternal life is free. It comes only through faith in Jesus Christ. When you repent sincerely from your heart and make the decision to turn away from sin, God grants you this gift. You decide to leave behind sinful pleasures—alcohol, immorality, bad habits, corruption, theft, etc.—and you begin to count all these worldly things as refuse, as Paul did.
Philippians 3:7-8
“But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ.
What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ.”
/After truly repenting and considering all the former things as garbage, the next step is to be baptized correctly—by full immersion in water, in the name of Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of your sins, as instructed in Acts 2:38. Then, God will give you the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Once these steps are completed, you will be a child of God, and He will grant you the gift of eternal life.
