What is the “Discharge” Mentioned in Leviticus 15:2?

Answer: Let us return to the Scriptures…

Leviticus 15:1-4 (ESV)
1 Then the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,
2 “Speak to the people of Israel and say to them: If any man has a discharge from his body, his discharge is unclean.
3 If the discharge continues to flow from his body, he shall be unclean.
4 Any bed on which he lies that has the discharge shall be unclean, and anything on which he sits shall be unclean.”

One of the diseases mentioned in the Bible is this “discharge” (kisonono). However, this discharge is more than what is commonly known as a venereal disease such as gonorrhea.

Other verses that mention this condition include Leviticus 22:14 and Numbers 5:2.

The biblical “discharge” refers to a variety of diseases causing abnormal secretions from the genital organs in both men and women. These secretions can result from sexual immorality or other causes and may include semen, blood, or mixtures thereof.

Thus, in the Old Testament, anyone experiencing such a discharge was considered ceremonially unclean until healed. Such a person was prohibited from assembling with God’s people and was set apart (Leviticus 15:2-4).

But does this apply today?

In the New Testament, there is no command to exclude the sick or women during their menstrual cycles from assembling with the church. All believers are encouraged to gather in worship because true defilement does not come from external physical conditions but from what proceeds out of the heart.

Mark 7:20-23 (ESV)
20 And he said, “What comes out of a person is what defiles him.
21 For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder,
22 adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness.
23 All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”

Therefore, if a person has purified their heart through repentance and faith in God, their worship is acceptable even if they have a physical illness.

If the discharge is the result of sexual sin, the individual must repent sincerely—turn away from the sin and be saved. After repentance and while seeking healing, the person may participate in the fellowship of believers.

If the discharge is due to other non-sexual causes, the person should cleanse their soul through repentance and receive God’s grace, joining the community of worshippers.

In conclusion:
The wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). Run away from sin, and the only safe refuge to receive help is the cross, because complete help is found in the cross of Jesus Christ.

If you have not yet received Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you are in danger and cannot overcome sin by yourself.

It is better to surrender your life to Him today, and He will save you.

God bless you.
