Question: In Matthew 24:27, the term “LIGHTNING” is mentioned. Did Jesus’ time experience this kind of lightning?
Answer: Let us examine.
Matthew 24:27 (ESV):
“For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.”
The lightning mentioned here is the “flash of light” that appears during storms. In its original sense, “lightning” refers to the electric discharge, not fire. Lightning has existed since creation.
Job 28:26 (ESV):
“When he gave to the wind its weight and apportioned the waters by measure,
when he made a decree for the rain and a way for the thunderbolt”
Other verses that mention the power and majesty of lightning include:
These scriptures show that just as lightning flashes from the east to the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. It is sudden, visible, and undeniable.
It illustrates the power and speed of His return. Normally, lightning strikes a high point and can split a large tree in two within a minute. Similarly, Jesus Christ will return with that same force, shaking the heights of the earth (Amos 4:13).
Isaiah 22:5 (ESV):
“For it is a day of tumult, of trampling and confusion, from the Lord God of hosts in the Valley of Vision; and the towers shall be brought down, and the fortified walls shall fall.”
This emphasizes that His return will be sudden, powerful, and undeniable.
Application for Today:
Have you received Jesus and made Him the Lord and Savior of your life? Are you living a holy life that pleases Him? If not, what are you waiting for? It is better to surrender your life to Jesus today because these are perilous times, and the end can come at any moment.
May the Lord bless you.
