{"id":42351,"date":"2024-08-13T11:39:02","date_gmt":"2024-08-13T08:39:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wingulamashahidi.org\/?p=42351"},"modified":"2025-04-08T09:38:07","modified_gmt":"2025-04-08T06:38:07","slug":"what-is-the-year-of-jubilee-in-scripture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wingulamashahidi.org\/en\/2024\/08\/13\/what-is-the-year-of-jubilee-in-scripture\/","title":{"rendered":"What Is the Year of Jubilee in Scripture?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\" data-start=\"275\" data-end=\"444\">The <strong data-start=\"279\" data-end=\"298\">Year of Jubilee<\/strong> (sometimes called <em data-start=\"317\" data-end=\"331\">Jubilee Year<\/em>, <em data-start=\"333\" data-end=\"342\">Jubilee<\/em>, or <em data-start=\"347\" data-end=\"356\">Yubilei<\/em>) was a special, God-ordained year in the Jewish calendar that came <strong data-start=\"424\" data-end=\"443\">every 50th year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"446\" data-end=\"601\">God commanded the Israelites to count <strong data-start=\"484\" data-end=\"515\">seven cycles of seven years<\/strong> (7 x 7 = 49), and the <strong data-start=\"538\" data-end=\"556\">year following<\/strong>\u2014the 50th\u2014was to be set apart as the Jubilee.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"603\" data-end=\"606\" \/>\n<h2 class=\"\" data-start=\"608\" data-end=\"655\"><strong data-start=\"611\" data-end=\"655\">A Year of Rest, Release, and Restoration<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"657\" data-end=\"788\">During the Jubilee year, the people were commanded <strong data-start=\"708\" data-end=\"730\">not to sow or reap<\/strong>. This meant they had to rest for two consecutive years:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"789\" data-end=\"944\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"789\" data-end=\"884\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"791\" data-end=\"884\">The <strong data-start=\"795\" data-end=\"808\">49th year<\/strong>, which was a <strong data-start=\"822\" data-end=\"838\">Sabbath year<\/strong> (every seventh year was a sabbatical year),<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"885\" data-end=\"944\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"887\" data-end=\"944\">And the <strong data-start=\"895\" data-end=\"908\">50th year<\/strong>, which was the <strong data-start=\"924\" data-end=\"943\">Year of Jubilee<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"946\" data-end=\"1002\">So how would they survive for two years without farming?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1004\" data-end=\"1132\">God promised to <strong data-start=\"1020\" data-end=\"1062\">bless them abundantly in the 48th year<\/strong>, providing enough food to sustain them throughout both years of rest:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1134\" data-end=\"1537\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1136\" data-end=\"1537\"><strong data-start=\"1136\" data-end=\"1163\">Leviticus 25:8\u201313 (NIV)<\/strong><br data-start=\"1163\" data-end=\"1166\" \/><em data-start=\"1168\" data-end=\"1537\">\u201cCount off seven Sabbath years\u2014seven times seven years\u2014so that the seven Sabbath years amount to a period of forty-nine years. Then have the trumpet sounded everywhere&#8230; Consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a Jubilee for you; each of you is to return to your family property and to your own clan.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"1539\" data-end=\"1542\" \/>\n<h2 class=\"\" data-start=\"1544\" data-end=\"1583\"><strong data-start=\"1547\" data-end=\"1583\">Key Features of the Jubilee Year<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol data-start=\"1585\" data-end=\"2111\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1585\" data-end=\"1716\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1588\" data-end=\"1716\"><strong data-start=\"1588\" data-end=\"1607\">Rest from Labor<\/strong><br data-start=\"1607\" data-end=\"1610\" \/>No sowing, no harvesting, no pruning. The land itself was to rest\u2014symbolizing trust in God&#8217;s provision.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1718\" data-end=\"1859\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1721\" data-end=\"1859\"><strong data-start=\"1721\" data-end=\"1746\">Cancellation of Debts<\/strong><br data-start=\"1746\" data-end=\"1749\" \/>Debts were forgiven, and no one was to exploit another based on the remaining years until the next Jubilee.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1861\" data-end=\"1970\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1864\" data-end=\"1970\"><strong data-start=\"1864\" data-end=\"1886\">Freedom for Slaves<\/strong><br data-start=\"1886\" data-end=\"1889\" \/>All Hebrew slaves were to be released and allowed to return to their families.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1972\" data-end=\"2111\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1975\" data-end=\"2111\"><strong data-start=\"1975\" data-end=\"2002\">Restoration of Property<\/strong><br data-start=\"2002\" data-end=\"2005\" \/>Any land that had been sold due to poverty or hardship was to be returned to its original family owner.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"2113\" data-end=\"2116\" \/>\n<h2 class=\"\" data-start=\"2118\" data-end=\"2155\"><strong data-start=\"2121\" data-end=\"2155\">Jubilee as a Picture of Christ<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2157\" data-end=\"2294\">The Jubilee was a <strong data-start=\"2175\" data-end=\"2237\">prophetic foreshadowing of the work of Christ on the cross<\/strong>. Jesus came to fulfill the spiritual meaning of Jubilee:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2296\" data-end=\"2516\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2298\" data-end=\"2516\"><strong data-start=\"2298\" data-end=\"2314\">Luke 4:18\u201319<\/strong><br data-start=\"2314\" data-end=\"2317\" \/><em data-start=\"2319\" data-end=\"2516\">\u201cThe Spirit of the Lord is upon me\u2026 He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord\u2019s favor.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2518\" data-end=\"2564\">Jesus is our <strong data-start=\"2531\" data-end=\"2550\">eternal Jubilee<\/strong>. Through Him:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2565\" data-end=\"2786\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2565\" data-end=\"2605\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2567\" data-end=\"2605\">We are <strong data-start=\"2574\" data-end=\"2603\">freed from slavery to sin<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2606\" data-end=\"2646\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2608\" data-end=\"2646\">Our <strong data-start=\"2612\" data-end=\"2644\">spiritual debts are forgiven<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2647\" data-end=\"2721\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2649\" data-end=\"2721\">We are <strong data-start=\"2656\" data-end=\"2693\">restored into fellowship with God<\/strong>, our rightful inheritance<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2722\" data-end=\"2786\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2724\" data-end=\"2786\">We are <strong data-start=\"2731\" data-end=\"2786\">released from bondage to sickness, demons, and fear<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"2788\" data-end=\"2791\" \/>\n<h2 class=\"\" data-start=\"2793\" data-end=\"2837\"><strong data-start=\"2796\" data-end=\"2837\">Practical Lessons for Believers Today<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2839\" data-end=\"2994\">Even though we may not celebrate the Jubilee in a literal, agricultural sense today, it still holds <strong data-start=\"2939\" data-end=\"2974\">spiritual and practical lessons<\/strong> for every believer.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"2996\" data-end=\"3029\">1. <strong data-start=\"3003\" data-end=\"3029\">The Importance of Rest<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3030\" data-end=\"3380\">We live in a busy, demanding world. Yet God values <strong data-start=\"3081\" data-end=\"3101\">intentional rest<\/strong>\u2014not just for the body, but for the soul.<br data-start=\"3142\" data-end=\"3145\" \/>Set aside extended periods of time, not just weekly Sabbaths, but <strong data-start=\"3211\" data-end=\"3254\">longer seasons dedicated to seeking God<\/strong>. If you&#8217;re employed or self-employed, <strong data-start=\"3293\" data-end=\"3324\">plan for spiritual retreats<\/strong> or breaks where you can be refreshed in God&#8217;s presence.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"3382\" data-end=\"3417\">2. <strong data-start=\"3389\" data-end=\"3417\">The Power of Forgiveness<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3418\" data-end=\"3664\">Jubilee teaches us to <strong data-start=\"3440\" data-end=\"3475\">release others from their debts<\/strong>\u2014not just financial, but emotional and relational ones.<br data-start=\"3530\" data-end=\"3533\" \/>Jesus said, <em data-start=\"3545\" data-end=\"3583\">\u201cForgive, and you will be forgiven.\u201d<\/em> (Luke 6:37)<br data-start=\"3595\" data-end=\"3598\" \/>You never know when you might need the same grace extended to you.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"3666\" data-end=\"3708\">3. <strong data-start=\"3673\" data-end=\"3708\">Be a Generous and Just Employer<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3709\" data-end=\"3993\">If you\u2019re an employer, <strong data-start=\"3732\" data-end=\"3769\">consider your workers\u2019 well-being<\/strong>. Give them time off when needed\u2014<strong data-start=\"3802\" data-end=\"3836\">not as punishment or deduction<\/strong>, but as an act of grace. God notices how you treat others, and honoring rest and release in the lives of others is part of <strong data-start=\"3960\" data-end=\"3992\">living the Jubilee principle<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"3995\" data-end=\"3998\" \/>\n<h2 class=\"\" data-start=\"4000\" data-end=\"4026\"><strong data-start=\"4003\" data-end=\"4026\">What Jubilee Is Not<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4028\" data-end=\"4347\">The term &#8220;Jubilee&#8221; has sometimes been misused today to refer to <strong data-start=\"4092\" data-end=\"4117\">wedding anniversaries<\/strong> or <strong data-start=\"4121\" data-end=\"4146\">birthday celebrations<\/strong>. While those may be joyful occasions, they are not the <strong data-start=\"4202\" data-end=\"4222\">biblical Jubilee<\/strong>.
