In 1 Samuel 1:15<\/strong>, we find a moving moment where Hannah<\/strong>, who had been praying fervently before the Lord, is mistaken by Eli the priest for being drunk:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cNot so, my lord,\u201d Hannah replied. \u201cI am a woman deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or strong drink; I was pouring out my soul before the Lord.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Her response not only clears up the misunderstanding, but also teaches us something deeper: that wine and strong drink were distinct<\/strong> in biblical times, both culturally and spiritually.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s explore what that difference is \u2014 and what it means for us today as followers of Christ.<\/p>\n

\n

1. Wine (Hebrew: yayin<\/em>) \u2013 A Symbol of Celebration, Worship, and Blessing<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In ancient Israel, wine was made by fermenting grape juice<\/strong> \u2014 nothing else. It held a significant cultural and religious role<\/strong>. It wasn\u2019t just for drinking \u2014 it was symbolic of joy, covenant, and even the Messianic hope<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u27a4 Wine in Social Life<\/h3>\n

Wine was a normal part of everyday Jewish life<\/strong>, especially during weddings and feasts<\/strong>. At the wedding in Cana<\/strong> (John 2), when the wine ran out, Jesus performed His first miracle by turning water into wine. This wasn\u2019t random \u2014 it pointed to the abundance and joy of the Kingdom of God<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u27a4 Wine in Worship<\/h3>\n

Wine was used in religious festivals<\/strong> like Passover. Jesus, during the Last Supper, used wine to represent His blood<\/strong> \u2014 sealing the New Covenant (Matthew 26:27\u201329). He was tying His mission to the traditions of Israel, but fulfilling them in a deeper spiritual way.<\/p>\n

\u27a4 Wine as a Blessing<\/h3>\n

Scripture also connects wine to God\u2019s provision and joy<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

Psalm 104:15<\/strong> \u2013 “…wine that gladdens the heart of man, oil to make his face shine, and bread that sustains his heart.”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

However, wine could also become a stumbling block<\/strong> when misused \u2014 leading to spiritual dullness or mockery.<\/p>\n

Proverbs 20:1<\/strong> \u2013 “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is a brawler, and whoever is led astray by them is not wise.”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u00a02. Strong Drink (Hebrew: shekar<\/em>) \u2013 Associated with Drunkenness and Lack of Discipline<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Unlike wine, strong drink<\/strong> was fermented from grains (like barley or wheat)<\/strong> or other fruits like dates and pomegranates<\/strong>. It had a higher alcohol content<\/strong>, and it was not typically part of religious life.<\/p>\n

\u27a4 Use in Excess and Ungodliness<\/h3>\n

Strong drink was associated with drunkenness<\/strong>, loss of self-control, and often, pagan practices<\/strong>. It was seen as something that clouded judgment<\/strong>, which is why priests were forbidden<\/strong> to drink it during service:<\/p>\n

Leviticus 10:9<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cYou and your sons are not to drink wine or strong drink whenever you enter the tent of meeting, or you will die. This is a lasting ordinance…\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Its use was linked to revelry<\/strong>, not reverence. In other words, strong drink was more about indulgence than worship.<\/p>\n

\n

What Does This Mean for Us Today?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

While the physical beverages may differ slightly today, the spiritual principles remain the same<\/strong>. The Bible warns against drunkenness<\/strong>, not because God is against enjoyment \u2014 but because drunkenness leads us away from His presence and blurs our spiritual senses.<\/p>\n

\n

Ephesians 5:18<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cDo not get drunk with wine, which leads to debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Paul contrasts physical intoxication with spiritual fullness<\/strong>. Where wine dulls, the Holy Spirit awakens<\/strong>. Where strong drink leads to chaos, the Spirit leads to peace, joy, and self-control<\/strong> (Galatians 5:22\u201323).<\/p>\n

\u27a4 Hannah\u2019s Example<\/h3>\n

Hannah reminds us that true worship requires clarity<\/strong>, sincerity, and focus. She wasn\u2019t drunk \u2014 she was pouring out her heart<\/strong> to the Lord. Her prayer was so intense, it looked like drunkenness from the outside \u2014 but it was actually Spirit-filled surrender.<\/p>\n

\u00a0A Call to Modern Believers<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Today, instead of chasing worldly highs, we’re called to seek the infilling of the Holy Spirit<\/strong>, who is our comfort, counselor, and strength.<\/p>\n

We don\u2019t need wine or strong drink to find peace, boldness, or joy \u2014 we have Christ.<\/strong> He is our \u201cnew wine\u201d (Luke 5:37\u201338), and He fills us in a way no drink ever could.<\/p>\n

So What Should We Do?<\/h3>\n
