It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person\u2019s work.<br \/>\n14 If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward.<br \/>\n15 If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved\u2014even though only as one escaping through the flames.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>1. <strong>The Two Main Types of Judgment in Scripture<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><strong>A. The Judgment of the Wicked (Unbelievers)<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Revelation 20:11\u201315<\/strong> describes the \u201cGreat White Throne Judgment,\u201d where unbelievers are judged according to their deeds.<\/li>\n<li>This judgment ends with eternal separation from God\u2014<strong>the lake of fire<\/strong> (Revelation 20:15).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>B. The Judgment of the Righteous (Believers)<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Believers in Christ will appear before the <strong>Judgment Seat of Christ<\/strong> (also known as the <strong>Bema Seat<\/strong>), where they are judged not for salvation, but for <strong>rewards<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Romans 14:10, 12 (NIV):<\/strong> <em>\u201cWe will all stand before God\u2019s judgment seat&#8230; each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>2 Corinthians 5:10 (NIV):<\/strong> <em>\u201cFor we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is the context of 1 Corinthians 3:13\u201315. Paul is addressing believers whose <strong>salvation is secure<\/strong>, but whose <strong>works will be tested<\/strong> for eternal reward.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>2. <strong>Understanding the \u201cFire\u201d in 1 Corinthians 3<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The \u201cfire\u201d here is metaphorical and represents <strong>God\u2019s holy scrutiny and judgment<\/strong>, specifically through His <strong>Word and righteousness<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Jeremiah 23:29 (NIV):<\/strong> <em>\u201cIs not my word like fire,\u201d declares the LORD, \u201cand like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li>The fire is <strong>not<\/strong> punishment, but <strong>testing<\/strong>. It reveals whether our ministry, motives, and message were built with integrity (gold, silver, stones) or superficiality (wood, hay, straw).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>3. <strong>Saved, but \u201cAs Through Fire\u201d \u2014 What Does It Mean?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Paul is speaking to <strong>believers<\/strong>, saying that even if their ministry or work fails the test, they will still be saved\u2014<strong>but without reward<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It\u2019s like someone escaping a burning house\u2014alive, but with nothing to show.<\/li>\n<li>The Greek phrase \u201cso as through fire\u201d (Greek: <em>h\u014ds dia puros<\/em>) emphasizes <strong>narrow escape<\/strong>, not purification.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>This does not support the idea of Purgatory.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Hebrews 9:27 (NIV):<\/strong> <em>\u201cPeople are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li>The concept of Purgatory (temporary post-death suffering to purify sins) contradicts Scripture and undermines the sufficiency of Christ\u2019s atonement.<\/li>\n<li>Jesus declared on the cross: <em>\u201cIt is finished\u201d<\/em> (John 19:30). Salvation is complete in Him.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>4. <strong>Theological Insight: Accountability in Ministry<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>God will hold every Christian accountable\u2014especially teachers, pastors, and ministers\u2014for how they taught His Word and led His people.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>James 3:1 (NIV):<\/strong> <em>\u201cNot many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li>If we dilute the gospel, fail to preach holiness, or fearfully avoid uncomfortable truths, our work may not endure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>5. <strong>What Are You Building?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Paul uses the analogy of building on a foundation. Christ is the <strong>only true foundation<\/strong>, but we choose <strong>how<\/strong> we build on it.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Are you building with <strong>truth, love, holiness, and obedience<\/strong> (precious stones)?<\/li>\n<li>Or are you using <strong>compromise, worldliness, and watered-down teaching<\/strong> (wood and hay)?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Final Thought:<\/h3>\n<p>The verse, <em>\u201cHe himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames\u201d<\/em>, reminds us that <strong>salvation is by grace<\/strong>, but <strong>rewards are based on faithfulness<\/strong>.
