One of the most frequently quoted statements of Jesus is:<\/span><\/p>\n

(Luke 20:25, NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cGive to Caesar what is Caesar\u2019s, and to God what is God\u2019s.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But what did Jesus really mean by this? Does it mean we can freely participate in anything the government legalizes\u2014like alcohol or cigarettes\u2014since those are \u201cCaesar\u2019s\u201d things? Let\u2019s explore the context and theological implications of this passage.<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. The Historical and Biblical Context<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    In Luke 20:21\u201325, religious leaders tried to trap Jesus with a political question:<\/span><\/p>\n

    (Luke 20:22, NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \u201cIs it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    Knowing their intent, Jesus asked for a coin and said in\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    (Luke 20:24\u201325, NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \u201cWhose image and inscription are on it?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

    \u201cCaesar\u2019s,\u201d they replied.<\/span><\/p>\n

    He said to them, \u2018Then give back to Caesar what is Caesar\u2019s, and to God what is God\u2019s.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    Here, Jesus affirmed the legitimacy of civil authority without compromising God\u2019s authority. The coin bore Caesar\u2019s image, meaning it belonged to him. Similarly, humans bear God\u2019s image (Genesis 1:27), so our lives belong to God.<\/span><\/p>\n

    1. What Belongs to Caesar?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Jesus was referring to civil duties like paying taxes and honoring legitimate government structures.<\/span><\/p>\n

      1. a) Paying Taxes<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        \u201cThis is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God\u2019s servants, who give their full time to governing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

        (Romans 13:6\u20137, NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n

        \u201cGive to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue…\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

        Taxes fund public services such as roads, healthcare, and education. Jesus endorsed this as a good and necessary practice\u2014not something evil.<\/span><\/p>\n

        1. b) Obeying Civil Laws and Promoting Peace<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          \u00a0Romans 13:1, NIV)<\/strong>\u201c<\/span><\/p>\n

          Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

          Governments are God\u2019s instruments for maintaining order. Therefore, laws promoting peace, justice, and public welfare are in harmony with biblical principles.<\/span><\/p>\n

          (Romans 13:4, NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n

          \u201cThe one in authority is God\u2019s servant for your good.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

          The government may permit alcohol and tobacco, but it does not require or encourage them. These substances often bring harm to health and relationships and can hinder spiritual growth.<\/span><\/p>\n

          (1 Corinthians 10:23, NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n

          \u201cEverything is permissible\u201d\u2014but not everything is beneficial. \u201cEverything is permissible\u201d\u2014but not everything is constructive.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

          We must evaluate all actions by their spiritual fruit and impact. as the bible say in<\/span><\/p>\n

          (1 Corinthians 6:19\u201320, NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n

          \u201cDo you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit… Therefore honor God with your bodies.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

          Just because something is allowed by law doesn\u2019t mean it’s approved by God.<\/span><\/p>\n

          What Belongs to God?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

          When Jesus said, \u201c…and to God what is God\u2019s,\u201d He pointed to a deeper spiritual truth.<\/span><\/p>\n

          if Caesar’s coin bore his image, then humans, who bear God\u2019s image, belong to God.<\/span><\/p>\n

          (Genesis 1:27, NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n

          \u201cSo God created mankind in his own image…\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

          What, then, does God expect from us?<\/strong><\/p>\n

          1. a) Repentance and Mercy as he said in\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            (Matthew 9:13, NIV)\u201c<\/strong><\/p>\n

            \u00a0But go and learn what this means: \u2018I desire mercy, not sacrifice.\u2019 For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

            God seeks our repentance and transformed hearts, not just religious rituals.<\/span><\/p>\n

            1. b) Faith, Justice, and Integrity<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              (Matthew 23:23, NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n

              \u201cWoe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees… You give a tenth… but you have neglected the more important matters of the law\u2014justice, mercy and faithfulness.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

              1. c) Worship and Holiness<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                (Romans 12:1, NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n

                \u201cTherefore, I urge you… to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God\u2014this is your true and proper worship.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

                1. d) Daily Sanctification<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                  (John 17:17, NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n

                  \u201cSanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

                  God wants us to continually grow in holiness through His Word and Spirit.<\/span><\/p>\n

                  A Final Reflection<\/strong><\/p>\n

                  Have you truly given your life to God?<\/span><\/p>\n

                  Have you repented of your sins, been baptized in the name of Jesus Christ (Acts 2:38), and received the Holy Spirit?<\/span><\/p>\n

                  (Acts 2:38, NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n

                  \u201cRepent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

                  Even if you are already saved, are you growing daily in sanctification through God’s Word?<\/span><\/p>\n
