When reading the Bible in Swahili, we often come across the word Mungu<\/em>, meaning\u00a0God<\/em>. However, what many may not realize is that in the original Hebrew text of the Old Testament, one of the most commonly used names for God is\u00a0ELOHIM<\/em>. This name appears over\u00a02,500 times<\/strong>\u00a0in the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) and carries rich theological meaning.<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0ELOHIM in Genesis 1:1<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The very first verse of the Bible sets the stage:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cIn the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0(Genesis 1:1, ESV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In Hebrew, this verse reads:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cBere\u2019shith bara\u2019 Elohim et hashamayim ve\u2019et ha\u2019aretz.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Here,\u00a0Elohim<\/em>\u00a0is used for\u00a0God<\/em>. Although\u00a0Elohim<\/em>\u00a0is grammatically plural in form, it is almost always used with singular verbs when referring to the God of Israel, indicating a\u00a0plurality of majesty<\/strong>, not multiple gods. This has been understood by many Christian theologians as an early hint or foreshadowing of the\u00a0Trinitarian nature<\/strong>\u00a0of God \u2014 Father, Son, and Holy Spirit \u2014 though the doctrine of the Trinity is fully developed later in the New Testament.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0The Meaning and Significance of ELOHIM<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The word\u00a0Elohim<\/em>\u00a0encompasses God’s\u00a0power, sovereignty, and creative authority<\/strong>. It portrays God as the\u00a0Almighty Creator<\/strong>, the\u00a0Supreme Judge<\/strong>, and the\u00a0Sustainer of all things<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0Compound Names Derived from EL or ELOHIM<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Throughout the Old Testament, we see God referred to by several compound names beginning with\u00a0El<\/em>\u00a0(a shortened form of\u00a0Elohim<\/em>), each revealing a different aspect of His character:<\/p>\n
