However, what many may not realize is that in the original Hebrew text of the Old Testament, one of the most commonly used names for God is\u00a0<em data-start=\"524\" data-end=\"532\">ELOHIM<\/em>. This name appears over\u00a0<strong data-start=\"557\" data-end=\"572\">2,500 times<\/strong>\u00a0in the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) and carries rich theological meaning.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"653\" data-end=\"685\">1.\u00a0<strong data-start=\"660\" data-end=\"685\">ELOHIM in Genesis 1:1<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"686\" data-end=\"735\">The very first verse of the Bible sets the stage:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"736\" data-end=\"817\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"738\" data-end=\"817\"><em data-start=\"738\" data-end=\"798\">\u201cIn the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0(Genesis 1:1, ESV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"819\" data-end=\"847\">In Hebrew, this verse reads:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"848\" data-end=\"907\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"850\" data-end=\"907\"><em data-start=\"850\" data-end=\"907\">\u201cBere\u2019shith bara\u2019 Elohim et hashamayim ve\u2019et ha\u2019aretz.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"909\" data-end=\"1374\">Here,\u00a0<em data-start=\"915\" data-end=\"923\">Elohim<\/em>\u00a0is used for\u00a0<em data-start=\"936\" data-end=\"941\">God<\/em>. Although\u00a0<em data-start=\"952\" data-end=\"960\">Elohim<\/em>\u00a0is grammatically plural in form, it is almost always used with singular verbs when referring to the God of Israel, indicating a\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1089\" data-end=\"1113\">plurality of majesty<\/strong>, not multiple gods. This has been understood by many Christian theologians as an early hint or foreshadowing of the\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1230\" data-end=\"1252\">Trinitarian nature<\/strong>\u00a0of God \u2014 Father, Son, and Holy Spirit \u2014 though the doctrine of the Trinity is fully developed later in the New Testament.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"1376\" data-end=\"1425\">2.\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1383\" data-end=\"1425\">The Meaning and Significance of ELOHIM<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1426\" data-end=\"1614\">The word\u00a0<em data-start=\"1435\" data-end=\"1443\">Elohim<\/em>\u00a0encompasses God&#8217;s\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1462\" data-end=\"1508\">power, sovereignty, and creative authority<\/strong>. It portrays God as the\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1533\" data-end=\"1553\">Almighty Creator<\/strong>, the\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1559\" data-end=\"1576\">Supreme Judge<\/strong>, and the\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1586\" data-end=\"1613\">Sustainer of all things<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"1616\" data-end=\"1667\">3.\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1623\" data-end=\"1667\">Compound Names Derived from EL or ELOHIM<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1668\" data-end=\"1850\">Throughout the Old Testament, we see God referred to by several compound names beginning with\u00a0<em data-start=\"1762\" data-end=\"1766\">El<\/em>\u00a0(a shortened form of\u00a0<em data-start=\"1788\" data-end=\"1796\">Elohim<\/em>), each revealing a different aspect of His character:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1852\" data-end=\"2253\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1852\" data-end=\"1968\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1854\" data-end=\"1887\"><strong data-start=\"1854\" data-end=\"1868\">El Shaddai<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<em data-start=\"1871\" data-end=\"1887\">\u201cGod Almighty\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1890\" data-end=\"1968\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1892\" data-end=\"1968\"><em data-start=\"1892\" data-end=\"1948\">\u201cI am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0(Genesis 17:1, ESV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1970\" data-end=\"2099\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1972\" data-end=\"2004\"><strong data-start=\"1972\" data-end=\"1984\">El Elyon<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<em data-start=\"1987\" data-end=\"2004\">\u201cGod Most High\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2007\" data-end=\"2099\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2009\" data-end=\"2099\"><em data-start=\"2009\" data-end=\"2078\">\u201cBlessed be Abram by God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0(Genesis 14:19, ESV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2101\" data-end=\"2253\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2103\" data-end=\"2136\"><strong data-start=\"2103\" data-end=\"2113\">El Roi<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<em data-start=\"2116\" data-end=\"2136\">\u201cThe God Who Sees\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2139\" data-end=\"2253\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2141\" data-end=\"2253\"><em data-start=\"2141\" data-end=\"2232\">\u201cYou are a God of seeing,\u201d for she said, \u201cTruly here I have seen him who looks after me.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0(Genesis 16:13, ESV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2255\" data-end=\"2445\">These names not only reflect theological truths but also arose from people&#8217;s\u00a0<strong data-start=\"2332\" data-end=\"2365\">real-life encounters with God<\/strong>, revealing how they experienced Him in moments of need, promise, or revelation.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"2447\" data-end=\"2493\">4.\u00a0<strong data-start=\"2454\" data-end=\"2493\">Jesus\u2019 Use of the Name on the Cross<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2494\" data-end=\"2575\">In the New Testament, during His crucifixion, Jesus quoted Psalm 22:1 in Aramaic:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2576\" data-end=\"2675\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2578\" data-end=\"2675\"><em data-start=\"2578\" data-end=\"2611\">\u201cEloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?\u201d<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 \u201cMy God, my God, why have you forsaken me?\u201d (Mark 15:34, ESV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2677\" data-end=\"2828\">This cry shows both His deep suffering and the continuity of His relationship with the God of Israel \u2014\u00a0<em data-start=\"2780\" data-end=\"2788\">Elohim<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 even in the midst of His abandonment.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"2830\" data-end=\"2863\">5.\u00a0<strong data-start=\"2837\" data-end=\"2863\">Theological Reflection<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2864\" data-end=\"2947\">Understanding the use of\u00a0<em data-start=\"2889\" data-end=\"2897\">Elohim<\/em>\u00a0deepens our appreciation for God&#8217;s nature. He is:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2948\" data-end=\"3204\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2948\" data-end=\"3001\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2950\" data-end=\"3001\"><strong data-start=\"2950\" data-end=\"2961\">Eternal<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 without beginning or end (Psalm 90:2)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3002\" data-end=\"3061\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3004\" data-end=\"3061\"><strong data-start=\"3004\" data-end=\"3020\">All-powerful<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Creator of all things (Jeremiah 32:17)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3062\" data-end=\"3134\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3064\" data-end=\"3134\"><strong data-start=\"3064\" data-end=\"3094\">Omniscient and Omnipresent<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 nothing escapes His sight (Psalm 139)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3135\" data-end=\"3204\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3137\" data-end=\"3204\"><strong data-start=\"3137\" data-end=\"3151\">Relational<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 not distant, but deeply involved with His creation<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3206\" data-end=\"3478\">The name\u00a0<em data-start=\"3215\" data-end=\"3223\">Elohim<\/em>\u00a0reminds us that God is not just a distant deity but the\u00a0<strong data-start=\"3280\" data-end=\"3294\">Living God<\/strong>\u00a0who creates, governs, and redeems. In Christian theology, this same Elohim is fully revealed in the person of\u00a0<strong data-start=\"3405\" data-end=\"3421\">Jesus Christ<\/strong>, who is called\u00a0<em data-start=\"3437\" data-end=\"3447\">Immanuel<\/em>, \u201cGod with us\u201d (Matthew 1:23).<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3485\" data-end=\"3766\"><strong data-start=\"3485\" data-end=\"3500\">Conclusion:<\/strong><br data-start=\"3500\" data-end=\"3503\" \/>The name\u00a0<em data-start=\"3512\" data-end=\"3520\">ELOHIM<\/em>\u00a0is more than just a title\u2014it reflects the divine majesty, power, and eternal nature of God.
