To answer this, let\u2019s begin by reading from Matthew 20:20\u201323 (NIV):<\/strong><\/p>\n

20 Then the mother of Zebedee\u2019s sons came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favor of him.<\/em>
21 \u201cWhat is it you want?\u201d he asked.<\/em>
She said, \u201cGrant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom.\u201d<\/em>
22 \u201cYou don\u2019t know what you are asking,\u201d Jesus said to them. \u201cCan you drink the cup I am going to drink?\u201d<\/em>

Theological Reflection:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The request made by the mother of James and John (the sons of Zebedee) reveals a misunderstanding common among the disciples \u2014 that greatness in the Kingdom of God is achieved through status or favor. Jesus uses this moment to teach a fundamental truth: honor in God’s Kingdom is not given through request or proximity, but through suffering, obedience, and divine purpose.<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. The Cup of Suffering (Participation in Christ\u2019s Suffering)<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Jesus asks, \u201cCan you drink the cup I am going to drink?\u201d<\/em>
In Scripture, the \u201ccup\u201d<\/strong> is often a symbol of suffering and God\u2019s judgment<\/strong> (cf. Isaiah 51:17; Jeremiah 25:15; Matthew 26:39<\/em>).<\/p>\n

Matthew 26:39 (NIV):<\/strong>
\u201cMy Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Here, Jesus refers to His impending suffering and death. When He tells James and John that they will<\/strong> drink from His cup, He means they too will suffer for the sake of the Gospel.<\/p>\n
