The Book of Galatians is one of the epistles written by the Apostle Paul to a group of churches in the region of Galatia (modern-day Turkey). Paul wrote this letter to address a serious theological crisis: the churches were turning away from the gospel of grace and adopting a legalistic approach to salvation.<\/p>\n
Right from the opening verse, Paul identifies himself as the author and emphasizes his divine calling\u2014not from human authority, but directly from Jesus Christ:<\/p>\n
Galatians 1:1 (ESV)<\/strong><\/p>\n “Paul, an apostle\u2014not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead…”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Paul expresses shock that the Galatian believers were so quickly deserting the gospel he preached. They were being influenced by Judaizers\u2014Jewish Christians who insisted that Gentile believers must obey the Mosaic Law (especially circumcision) to be saved.<\/p>\n Galatians 1:6\u20137 (ESV)<\/strong><\/p>\n “I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel\u2014not that there is another one…”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Paul challenges them strongly in Galatians 3:1 (ESV)<\/strong>:<\/p>\n “O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified.”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Paul firmly states that the foundation of the Christian life is faith in Jesus Christ\u2014not obedience to the law. The Galatian churches had begun in faith but were now trying to be perfected by works.<\/p>\n Galatians 3:3 (ESV)<\/strong><\/p>\n “Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Paul\u2019s message echoes Ephesians 2:8\u20139:<\/p>\n Ephesians 2:8\u20139 (ESV)<\/strong><\/p>\n “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n He clarifies that righteousness comes through faith, just as it did for Abraham:<\/p>\n Galatians 3:6\u20137 (ESV)<\/strong><\/p>\n “Just as Abraham \u2018believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness\u2019? Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham.”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Paul explains the purpose of the law: it was a guardian until Christ came. It reveals sin but cannot save.<\/p>\n Galatians 3:24\u201325 (ESV)<\/strong><\/p>\n “So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. He answers that true believers have crucified the flesh and now live by the Spirit.<\/p>\n Galatians 5:24 (ESV)<\/strong><\/p>\n “And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n The Christian life is not lawless\u2014it is Spirit-led. Legalism cannot save. Neither can religious rituals.
