In the New Testament, believers in Christ are given the privilege of being priests through Him. This does not mean that we offer sacrifices in the same way that the Old Testament priests did, but rather, we offer our lives as living sacrifices (Romans 12:1). This is in keeping with the New Covenant, where Jesus, as the ultimate High Priest, made the final sacrifice for sin (Hebrews 7:27; Hebrews 9:12).<\/p>\n

The first earthly king of Israel, Saul, was anointed by God (1 Samuel 9:16), but David, who was after God\u2019s own heart, is often used as a model of the ideal king (Acts 13:22). Jesus, as the King of kings, holds this perfect authority. In Revelation 19:16, He is described as “King of Kings and Lord of Lords.” This underscores His supreme authority over all earthly and heavenly realms.<\/p>\n

Jesus Christ is the ultimate fulfillment of both the priesthood and kingship. Hebrews 7:11-17 explains that Jesus is both the eternal High Priest and the King in the order of Melchizedek, a priest-king who appears in Genesis 14:18-20 and is described as a type of Christ. Jesus, unlike the Levitical priests, does not offer sacrifices for His own sins because He is sinless, but He offers Himself as the once-for-all sacrifice for the sins of the world (Hebrews 7:27).<\/p>\n

Jesus’ dual role as both priest and king is foundational to the Christian faith. As our priest, He mediates between us and God. As our King, He rules over us and His kingdom with authority and power. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus established a kingdom that is both spiritual (in the hearts of believers) and will be fully manifested in the future (Revelation 11:15).<\/p>\n

Our Inheritance:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

As believers in Christ, we are heirs to all that Christ has.<\/p>\n

1 Peter 1:3-4 says, \u201cBlessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you.\u201d<\/em> (NKJV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This inheritance includes the spiritual blessings of being priests who can approach God, intercede for others, and experience His presence. It also includes the privilege of being kings who have been given authority to rule over sin, the enemy, and even creation in Christ\u2019s name.<\/p>\n

We also share in the future reign of Christ during the millennial kingdom. Revelation 5:10 states, \u201cAnd have made us kings and priests to our God; and we shall reign on the earth.\u201d<\/em> (NKJV) This speaks of a future time when believers will reign with Christ during His 1,000-year reign on earth, which is part of the fulfillment of God\u2019s kingdom on earth.<\/p>\n

Practical Implications:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

As members of this royal priesthood, believers are called to live with both spiritual authority and responsibility. We are called to live lives of holiness, offering spiritual sacrifices to God (Romans 12:1), and to proclaim the message of salvation, calling others into the kingdom of God. This royal identity also gives believers the strength and authority to face the challenges of life with confidence, knowing that we have been empowered by the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n
