Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but one sinner destroys much good.”<\/em> \u2013 <\/span>Ecclesiastes 9:18 (NIV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What Does This Verse Mean?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

To grasp the meaning of this verse, we need to reflect on why people engage in warfare. Across history, wars have erupted over many issues\u2014self-defense, revenge, ideological conflicts, the thirst for power, or the desire to expand territory. In such cases, weapons are often seen as the ultimate solution.<\/p>\n

But the Bible presents an alternative that is far superior: wisdom<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Biblical Concept of Wisdom<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Biblically, wisdom is not merely intelligence or knowledge. It is the God-given ability to discern right from wrong, make righteous decisions, and live in harmony with God’s will. According to<\/p>\n

James 3:17 (NIV):<\/strong>But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.”<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This divine wisdom enables people to resolve conflicts, promote peace, and build enduring systems without resorting to violence.<\/p>\n

Solomon\u2019s Example: A King Who Ruled with Wisdom<\/strong><\/h3>\n

King Solomon, traditionally believed to be the author of Ecclesiastes, was a prime example of a leader guided by divine wisdom. In 1 Kings 3:9-12 (NIV)<\/strong>, we read that Solomon asked God for a discerning heart to govern the people and distinguish between right and wrong. God was pleased with this request and granted him unmatched wisdom.<\/p>\n

Solomon\u2019s reign was marked by peace, not because he lacked enemies, but because his wisdom allowed him to manage relationships diplomatically. Unlike his father David\u2014who constantly faced war\u2014Solomon avoided unnecessary bloodshed. The wisdom God gave him brought stability and prosperity to Israel (see 1 Kings 4:29-34<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

“One Sinner Destroys Much Good” \u2013 A Sobering Warning<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The second part of Ecclesiastes 9:18 reminds us of how fragile good outcomes can be. It takes only one unrighteous person<\/strong>\u2014a “sinner” in biblical terms\u2014to undo progress and damage what has been built.<\/p>\n

We see this throughout Scripture. For instance:<\/p>\n
