After His resurrection, Jesus restores Peter and gives him a glimpse of his future. But what follows is a revealing moment that exposes a common human weakness: comparison. When Peter asks about another disciple\u2019s destiny, Jesus replies with a simple yet powerful truth: <em>\u201cWhat is that to you? You follow me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This passage invites us to reflect on our individual callings, the danger of comparison, and the necessity of faithfully following Christ\u2014regardless of others\u2019 paths.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>1. Peter\u2019s Restoration and Commission (John 21:15\u201317)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>After Peter had denied Jesus three times (John 18:15\u201327), Jesus graciously restores him with a threefold question:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cSimon, son of John, do you love me?\u201d<\/em> (John 21:15\u201317)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Peter affirms his love each time, and Jesus responds with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>\u201cFeed my lambs\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cTend my sheep\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cFeed my sheep\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is not only personal restoration\u2014it is Peter\u2019s <strong>apostolic recommissioning<\/strong>. Jesus affirms Peter\u2019s leadership role in the early church (cf. 1 Peter 5:1\u20133). It shows that <strong>failure does not disqualify a believer from future service<\/strong> when there is repentance and love for Christ.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>2. Jesus Foretells Peter\u2019s Martyrdom (John 21:18\u201319)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Jesus follows the restoration with a sobering prophecy:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWhen you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands\u2026\u201d<\/em> (John 21:18)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This expression, <em>\u201cstretch out your hands,\u201d<\/em> was a common idiom for crucifixion. John explains in verse 19:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201c(This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.)\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Peter would glorify God not just in life but also in death. According to early church tradition (e.g. Origen, Eusebius), Peter was crucified in Rome, upside down, by his own request\u2014deeming himself unworthy to die in the same manner as his Lord.<\/p>\n<p>This reminds us that <strong>discipleship involves sacrifice<\/strong>, and that true love for Christ includes a willingness to suffer for His name (cf. Philippians 1:29, Luke 9:23).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>3. Peter\u2019s Question About John (John 21:20\u201321)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As soon as Peter hears about his own destiny, he turns and sees John, \u201cthe disciple whom Jesus loved,\u201d and asks:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cLord, what about this man?\u201d<\/em> (v. 21)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Peter is essentially saying, <em>\u201cIf I must suffer and die, what will happen to him?\u201d<\/em> This is a deeply human moment\u2014comparing our journey to another\u2019s is a temptation we all face.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>4. Jesus\u2019 Theological Response: \u201cYou Follow Me\u201d (John 21:22)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Jesus replies:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cIf it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me!\u201d<\/em> (John 21:22)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In other words: <em>\u201cEven if I choose a completely different path for John, that is not your concern. Your responsibility is to follow me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Theologically, this response affirms two important truths:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Divine Sovereignty<\/strong> in calling: God assigns different paths, ministries, and ends to each believer (Romans 12:6\u20138; 1 Corinthians 12:11).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Personal responsibility<\/strong> in discipleship: We are accountable for how we follow Christ individually, not for how others do (Galatians 6:4\u20135).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Jesus\u2019 sharp response also corrects the false assumption that <strong>God\u2019s favor is measured by ease or suffering<\/strong>. John might live a long life (as he did), while Peter would face martyrdom\u2014but both lives glorify God in their own ways.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>5. The Danger of Comparison in Ministry<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Comparison can lead to jealousy, insecurity, and even spiritual burnout. Many believers today struggle with thoughts like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>\u201cWhy is their ministry growing faster than mine?\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cWhy do they have more influence or visibility?\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cShouldn\u2019t I do what they\u2019re doing?\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But Scripture warns us not to compare:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cLet each one test his own work\u2026 For each will have to bear his own load.\u201d<\/em> (Galatians 6:4\u20135)<br \/>\n<em>\u201cNot all are apostles, not all are prophets\u2026\u201d<\/em> (1 Corinthians 12:29\u201330)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Instead of imitation, we are called to <strong>faithfulness<\/strong>. As in the <strong>Parable of the Talents<\/strong> (Matthew 25:14\u201330), God rewards not based on how much we were given but how faithfully we used what we had.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>6. John\u2019s Unique Role and the Spread of a Misunderstanding (John 21:23)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>John, the author of this Gospel, clarifies:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cSo the saying spread among the brothers that this disciple was not to die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die&#8230;\u201d<\/em> (v. 23)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Misinterpretation of Jesus\u2019 words led to rumors about John\u2019s immortality. John himself corrects this. This highlights the importance of <strong>careful theological interpretation<\/strong>\u2014taking Jesus\u2019 words at face value without reading in assumptions.<\/p>\n<p>John lived a long life, exiled on Patmos, where he received the <strong>Revelation of Jesus Christ<\/strong> (Revelation 1:9). His path was different, but not less significant than Peter\u2019s.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>7. Final Application: Stay in Your Lane<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The message is clear: <strong>God\u2019s calling is personal<\/strong>. Whether you lead a large congregation or minister quietly in a village, God values your obedience more than your comparison.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWhatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.\u201d<\/em> (Colossians 3:23)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cIt is required of stewards that they be found faithful.\u201d<\/em> (1 Corinthians 4:2)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Peter\u2019s question\u2014<em>\u201cLord, what about this man?\u201d<\/em>\u2014is the same question we often ask. But Jesus\u2019 answer is timeless:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWhat is that to you? You follow me.\u201d<\/em> (John 21:22)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You are not called to walk another\u2019s path. You are called to follow Jesus where He leads you. Do not measure your value by someone else\u2019s journey.
