Introduction: What Is Yeast?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In Scripture, Jesus uses the term “yeast” (or leaven)<\/strong> symbolically to warn about hidden spiritual dangers. To understand the weight of His warning, let\u2019s first define what yeast is.<\/p>\n

In simple terms, yeast<\/strong> (also called leaven) is a substance made of living microorganisms (scientifically known as Saccharomyces cerevisiae<\/em>). When added to flour and water, it ferments the dough, producing gas that causes the dough to rise. Though small in quantity, yeast spreads throughout the dough and changes its nature completely<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This physical process serves as a powerful spiritual metaphor: small, hidden influences can transform an entire life, community, or belief system.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jesus\u2019 Warning About Yeast<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Jesus gives a direct warning to His disciples:<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd he cautioned them, saying, \u2018Watch out; beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.\u2019\u201d<\/strong>
\n\u2013 Mark 8:15, ESV<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

At first, the disciples misunderstood, thinking Jesus was referring to physical bread. But Jesus was talking about spiritual influence<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

\u201cThen they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.\u201d<\/strong>

Luke\u2019s Gospel clarifies further:<\/p>\n

\u201cBeware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.\u201d<\/strong>

Two Kinds of Dangerous Influence<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Jesus identifies two kinds of “yeast”:<\/p>\n

1. The Yeast of the Pharisees \u2013 Religious Hypocrisy<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Pharisees were known for their strict religious rules<\/strong> and public displays of righteousness. However, Jesus exposed their spiritual inconsistency<\/strong>:<\/p>\n
