In Matthew 4:5\u20137 (ESV)<\/em>, we read:<\/p>\n

\u201cThen the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, \u2018If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,
\n\u201cHe will command his angels concerning you,\u201d and \u201cOn their hands they will bear you up,
\nlest you strike your foot against a stone.\u201d\u2019
\nJesus said to him, \u2018Again it is written, \u201cYou shall not put the Lord your God to the test.\u201d\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

1. What Is the Holy City Referred To?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The \u201choly city\u201d mentioned here is Jerusalem<\/strong>\u2014not the Heavenly Jerusalem described in Revelation, but the earthly Jerusalem<\/strong> located in Israel. Though it is called \u201choly\u201d due to its covenantal and prophetic significance in the history of God\u2019s people (e.g., Psalm 48:1-2<\/em>), it is still part of the current fallen world. Therefore, Satan is not barred from accessing it.<\/p>\n

Theological Note:<\/strong>
\nThe term \u201choly\u201d (Greek: hagios<\/em>) in this context refers to the city\u2019s religious identity, not its moral or spiritual perfection. Earthly Jerusalem has been both the site of divine worship and of rebellion (Isaiah 1:21<\/em>). Thus, Satan\u2019s presence there is not contradictory to scripture.<\/p>\n

2. Why Would Satan Bring Jesus to the Temple?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Satan led Jesus to the pinnacle of the Temple<\/strong>, likely the southeastern corner overlooking the Kidron Valley\u2014a dizzying height\u2014hoping to tempt Jesus to test God’s protection by performing a dramatic leap.<\/p>\n

Satan even quotes scripture, Psalm 91:11\u201312 (ESV)<\/em>:<\/p>\n

\u201cFor he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.
\nOn their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But he misuses<\/strong> the verse, removing it from its context. Psalm 91 is a psalm of trust<\/strong>, not a license for testing God.<\/p>\n

Jesus answers with Scripture properly interpreted:<\/strong>
\nDeuteronomy 6:16 (ESV)<\/em>:<\/p>\n

\u201cYou shall not put the Lord your God to the test.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Theological Insight:<\/strong>
\nSatan often tempts not by denying God’s Word but by distorting it<\/strong>\u2014a tactic seen as early as Genesis 3:1\u20135. Jesus, empowered by the Holy Spirit (Luke 4:1<\/em>), counters temptation not by personal strength but by submitting to the truth of God\u2019s Word<\/strong>\u2014an example for all believers.<\/p>\n

3. Lessons for Believers Today<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Satan\u2019s strategy here teaches us something important:
\nHe doesn\u2019t always tempt us in dark, obvious places\u2014but often in holy ones.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In fact, he brought Jesus to the Temple<\/strong>, not a brothel or a pagan temple. Today, many believers fall not in the streets but in the pews<\/strong>\u2014through pride, division, lust, and deception that arise within the church.<\/p>\n

1 Peter 5:8 (ESV)<\/strong> warns:<\/p>\n

\u201cBe sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That\u2019s why we sometimes hear of pastors, ministers, or worship leaders falling into sin\u2014often with other church members, not strangers. Satan knows that temptation is most effective when it comes in disguised holiness<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This reflects Paul\u2019s warning in 2 Corinthians 11:14\u201315 (ESV)<\/em>:<\/p>\n

\u201cEven Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

4. What About the New Jerusalem?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Some may wonder if Satan could ever access the Heavenly Jerusalem<\/strong>. The answer is a firm no<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Revelation 21:2\u20133, 23\u201327 (ESV)<\/em> describes the New Jerusalem<\/strong> as a holy city that will descend from heaven after the final judgment:<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb\u2019s book of life.\u201d<\/em> (v. 27<\/em>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This city is holy in both name and nature<\/strong>\u2014no sin, no darkness, no devil will ever enter. It represents the eternal dwelling of God with His redeemed people<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Conclusion: Stay Watchful in Holy Places<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Jesus didn\u2019t fall into Satan\u2019s trap because He stood firm on the Word of God. For us, the danger is real\u2014temptation doesn\u2019t always look evil<\/strong>, and the church is not exempt<\/strong> from spiritual attacks.<\/p>\n

We must be especially discerning within sacred spaces<\/strong>, just as Jesus was in the Temple.<\/p>\n

\u201cSubmit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.\u201d<\/strong>
\n\u2014 James 4:7 (ESV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

May we remain rooted in scripture, filled with the Holy Spirit, and aware that Satan\u2019s strategy often begins where we feel safest.<\/p>\n
