This <\/span>passage <\/span>in <\/span>Hebrews <\/span>is <\/span>one <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>most <\/span>sobering <\/span>warnings <\/span>in <\/span>the <\/span>New <\/span>Testament. <\/span>It <\/span>is <\/span>directed <\/span>at <\/span>a <\/span>very <\/span>specific <\/span>group <\/span>of <\/span>people\u2014<\/span>those <\/span>who <\/span>have <\/span>had <\/span>deep <\/span>spiritual <\/span>experiences<\/span><\/strong> and <\/span>yet <\/span>willfully <\/span>choose <\/span>to <\/span>turn <\/span>away <\/span>from <\/span>Christ<\/span><\/strong>. <\/span>Let\u2019s <\/span>unpack <\/span>what <\/span>the <\/span>writer <\/span>means.<\/span><\/p>\n

Who <\/span>Are <\/span>These <\/span>People?<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n

    This <\/span>is <\/span>not <\/span>describing <\/span>new <\/span>or <\/span>immature <\/span>believers, <\/span>but <\/span>people <\/span>who <\/span>have <\/span>fully <\/span>participated <\/span>in <\/span>the <\/span>Christian <\/span>life<\/span><\/strong> and <\/span>had <\/span>real <\/span>experiences <\/span>with <\/span>God.<\/span><\/p>\n

    What <\/span>Happens <\/span>When <\/span>They <\/span>Fall <\/span>Away?<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n

    The <\/span>Greek <\/span>term <\/span>used <\/span>here <\/span>for \u201c<\/span>fall <\/span>away\u201d (<\/span>parapipt\u014d<\/span><\/em>) <\/span>implies <\/span>a <\/span>deliberate, <\/span>conscious <\/span>turning <\/span>away<\/span><\/strong> from <\/span>Christ. <\/span>This <\/span>isn’t <\/span>a <\/span>momentary <\/span>lapse, <\/span>ignorance, <\/span>or <\/span>a <\/span>season <\/span>of <\/span>doubt\u2014<\/span>it\u2019s <\/span>a <\/span>willful <\/span>rejection<\/span><\/strong> of <\/span>Jesus <\/span>after <\/span>knowing <\/span>Him <\/span>intimately.<\/span><\/p>\n

    The <\/span>writer <\/span>says <\/span>it <\/span>is <\/span>impossible<\/span><\/strong> (<\/span>not <\/span>difficult, <\/span>but <\/span>impossible) <\/span>to <\/span>bring <\/span>such <\/span>people <\/span>back <\/span>to <\/span>repentance <\/span>because <\/span>they <\/span>are <\/span>crucifying <\/span>Christ <\/span>all <\/span>over <\/span>again<\/span><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

    What <\/span>Does <\/span>It <\/span>Mean <\/span>to “<\/span>Crucify <\/span>the <\/span>Son <\/span>of <\/span>God <\/span>All <\/span>Over <\/span>Again”?<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

    To “<\/span>crucify <\/span>Christ <\/span>again” <\/span>does <\/span>not <\/span>mean<\/span><\/strong> Christ <\/span>is <\/span>literally <\/span>crucified <\/span>again. <\/span>Instead, <\/span>it’s <\/span>a <\/span>metaphorical <\/span>expression<\/span><\/strong> describing <\/span>what <\/span>such <\/span>a <\/span>person <\/span>is <\/span>doing <\/span>in <\/span>spirit<\/span><\/strong>. <\/span>By <\/span>willfully <\/span>rejecting <\/span>Jesus <\/span>after <\/span>fully <\/span>knowing <\/span>Him, <\/span>it\u2019s <\/span>as <\/span>if <\/span>they <\/span>are <\/span>siding <\/span>with <\/span>the <\/span>very <\/span>people <\/span>who <\/span>nailed <\/span>Him <\/span>to <\/span>the <\/span>cross\u2014<\/span>declaring <\/span>by <\/span>their <\/span>actions <\/span>that <\/span>Jesus <\/span>deserves <\/span>death <\/span>and <\/span>shame <\/span>once <\/span>more<\/span><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

    This <\/span>is <\/span>an <\/span>act <\/span>of <\/span>deep <\/span>betrayal<\/span><\/strong>\u2014<\/span>much <\/span>like <\/span>Judas <\/span>Iscariot, <\/span>who <\/span>walked <\/span>closely <\/span>with <\/span>Jesus <\/span>but <\/span>chose <\/span>to <\/span>betray <\/span>Him. <\/span>The <\/span>phrase <\/span>\u201c<\/span>subjecting <\/span>him <\/span>to <\/span>public <\/span>disgrace\u201d<\/span><\/strong> means <\/span>they <\/span>are <\/span>shaming <\/span>Christ <\/span>openly, <\/span>treating <\/span>His <\/span>sacrifice <\/span>as <\/span>worthless, <\/span>and <\/span>showing <\/span>contempt <\/span>for <\/span>His <\/span>work <\/span>on <\/span>the <\/span>cross.<\/span><\/p>\n
