In Acts 12:21\u201323<\/strong>, the Bible tells a shocking story of divine judgment on a man who accepted glory that rightfully belonged to God:<\/p>\n

\u201cOn an appointed day Herod put on his royal robes, took his seat upon the throne, and delivered an oration to them. And the people were shouting, \u2018The voice of a god, and not of a man!\u2019 Immediately an angel of the Lord struck him down, because he did not give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and breathed his last.\u201d<\/em> (Acts 12:21\u201323, ESV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This event is not just historical it carries theological weight and a solemn warning about pride, the danger of self-glorification, and God\u2019s intolerance of idolatry, even in the form of human ego.<\/p>\n

1. Herod\u2019s Sin: Stealing God\u2019s Glory<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Herod Agrippa I was a politically powerful king, known for persecuting the early Church (Acts 12:1\u20133). When the people praised him as a god, Herod accepted the worship instead of redirecting the glory to God. This was the core of his sin.<\/p>\n

Scripture is clear: God alone deserves glory.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n

\u201cI am the Lord; that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to carved idols.\u201d<\/em> (Isaiah 42:8)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Herod\u2019s pride mirrors that of Satan, who sought to exalt himself above God (Isaiah 14:13\u201314). Pride is the root of many downfalls.<\/p>\n

This was not symbolic it was a physical affliction from God, a supernatural judgment.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, the Jewish historian Josephus<\/strong> also recorded this event, stating Herod died in agony after five days of abdominal pain, further confirming the biblical account (Antiquities 19.8.2).<\/p>\n

In biblical theology, such a judgment reflects God\u2019s holiness and justice<\/strong>. Just as God struck Ananias and Sapphira for lying to the Holy Spirit (Acts 5:1\u201310), He struck Herod for blasphemously accepting glory that belongs to Him alone.<\/p>\n

3. A Pattern in Scripture: God Humbles the Proud<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This was not the first time God humbled a ruler. King Nebuchadnezzar<\/strong> was also judged when he exalted himself:<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the end of twelve months he was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, and the king answered and said, \u2018Is not this great Babylon, which I have built by my mighty power…?\u2019 While the words were still in the king\u2019s mouth, there fell a voice from heaven… Immediately the word was fulfilled…\u201d<\/em> (Daniel 4:29\u201333)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Nebuchadnezzar lost his mind and lived like an animal until he acknowledged God’s sovereignty.<\/p>\n

4. A Warning for Today: Pride Still Kills<\/strong><\/h3>\n

While we may not see such visible judgments today, the principle remains: God resists the proud.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cGod opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.\u201d<\/em> (James 4:6)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Whether you are a leader, artist, preacher, or influencer, God expects you to acknowledge that your gifts and opportunities come from Him.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights…\u201d<\/em> (James 1:17)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The danger today is more subtle: people seek fame, followers, and admiration. But whenever we exalt ourselves without honoring God, we risk spiritual decay and even divine discipline.<\/p>\n

5. Our Response: Give Glory to God Always<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Whether in success, talent, wealth, or ministry, give credit to God.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cSo, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.\u201d<\/em> (1 Corinthians 10:31)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

\u201cLet the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.\u201d<\/em> (Jeremiah 9:23\u201324)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Let\u2019s remember: this world is not ours. It belongs to God. We are stewards of what He gives us not owners. Giving God glory protects us from pride and keeps us in right standing with Him.<\/p>\n

Herod\u2019s story is a reminder that God takes His glory seriously. He is patient but not passive. As Isaiah declares,<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Lord of hosts has purposed, and who will annul it? His hand is stretched out, and who will turn it back?\u201d<\/em> (Isaiah 14:27)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
