In Matthew 5:21\u201322<\/strong>, Jesus redefines how we should understand murder\u2014not just as a physical act, but as something that can begin in the heart and be expressed through our words.<\/p>\n

Matthew 5:21\u201322\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cYou have heard that it was said to the people long ago, \u2018You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.\u2019 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, \u2018Raca,\u2019 is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, \u2018You fool!\u2019 will be in danger of the fire of hell.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

1. Jesus Expands the Law\u2019s Meaning<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In the Old Testament, murder was condemned as a direct violation of God\u2019s moral law (Exodus 20:13). The Pharisees focused mainly on the outward act<\/strong> of murder. But Jesus, as the fulfillment of the law (Matthew 5:17), goes deeper\u2014He targets the inner attitude<\/strong> of the heart.<\/p>\n

In 1 John 3:15, <\/strong>we read:<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Jesus\u2019 teaching agrees with this: hatred, anger, and contempt are the roots<\/strong> of murder, and they are just as sinful in God\u2019s eyes.<\/p>\n

2. Understanding the Three Degrees of Inner Sin<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Jesus identifies three escalating behaviors that stem from the heart:<\/p>\n

Being angry with a brother or sister (fellow believer or neighbor) is not a minor emotion\u2014it can lead to bitterness, revenge, or hatred. In God\u2019s court, this anger already makes us liable to judgment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cGet rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This offense, Jesus says, makes one answerable to the <\/span>Sanhedrin<\/strong>, the religious council, symbolizing serious spiritual consequences.<\/span><\/h4>\n

\u201cWith the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God\u2019s likeness\u2026 My brothers and sisters, this should not be.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

c. “You Fool!” \u2013 Cursing or Damning Someone<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

Calling someone<\/span> a<\/span> fool<\/span> (<\/span>Greek: moros<\/em>, where we get the word \u201cmoron\u201d) implies moral worthlessness or spiritual condemnation. This is not casual name-calling\u2014it\u2019s judging someone as beyond redemption<\/strong>, which is dangerous territory.<\/p>\n

Matthew 12:36\u201337\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cBut I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Jesus says such speech is deserving of \u201cthe fire of hell\u201d (Greek: Gehenna<\/em>), a metaphor for eternal punishment.<\/p>\n

3. The Heart is the Real Issue<\/strong><\/h3>\n

What Jesus is teaching is that sin begins in the heart<\/strong>, not just in outward actions. This echoes the prophetic tradition of the Old Testament:<\/p>\n

4. The Role of the Holy Spirit<\/strong><\/h3>\n

To overcome sinful anger, insults, and cursing, we need the transforming power of the Holy Spirit<\/strong>. It’s only through His work in us that we can exhibit self-control, love, patience, and kindness.<\/p>\n

Galatians 5:22\u201323\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cBut the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control…\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Trying to control our words and emotions without God will fail. We need a renewed heart<\/strong> and Spirit-filled life<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

5. God Has Always Taken Words Seriously<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Even in the Old Testament, cursing your parents<\/strong> was a capital offense:<\/p>\n

Exodus 21:17\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWhoever curses his father or his mother shall be put to death.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This shows the weight God places on respectful speech<\/strong>\u2014especially toward others in positions of honor. Our culture may normalize insults, but Scripture does not.<\/p>\n

Final Thought:<\/h3>\n

Jesus reminds us that God sees beyond appearances<\/strong>. He cares about what\u2019s going on in your heart.
\nSo before hatred or harsh words ever turn into violence, God wants to deal with it at the root. That\u2019s why we\u2019re called to repent, forgive<\/strong>, and walk in love.<\/p>\n

Ephesians 4:26\u201327\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIn your anger do not sin… Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Let us ask the Lord daily:
