What is Pride?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Pride is a sinful attitude that elevates oneself above others and, ultimately, above God. It stems from a heart that relies on personal status, achievement, or appearance instead of God’s grace and truth.<\/p>\n

The Bible repeatedly warns against pride because it leads to spiritual blindness, relational breakdowns, and separation from God. A proud person is often boastful, dismissive, unteachable, and self-centered\u2014qualities that are contrary to the character of Christ.<\/p>\n

\n

Sources of Pride<\/strong><\/h2>\n

1. Wealth<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Wealth can tempt people to feel self-sufficient and independent from God. This is known as \u201cthe pride of life\u201d<\/em> in 1 John 2:16 (ESV)<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

\u201cFor all that is in the world\u2014the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life\u2014is not from the Father but is from the world.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Those who trust in riches may reject spiritual truth, believing their possessions give them security and value. Jesus warned:<\/p>\n

Luke 12:15 (ESV)<\/strong>: \u201cTake care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one\u2019s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Even those chasing wealth may show contempt for God\u2019s Word, equating success with material gain rather than spiritual depth.<\/p>\n

2. Education<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Worldly knowledge, while valuable, can foster intellectual pride. This occurs when people believe their academic achievements make them superior\u2014even to God\u2019s revelation.<\/p>\n

Paul addressed this danger:<\/p>\n

1 Corinthians 8:1 (ESV)<\/strong>: \u201c\u2026This \u2018knowledge\u2019 puffs up, but love builds up.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Spiritual truth does not depend on human intelligence. The apostles, though mostly uneducated, carried divine wisdom:<\/p>\n

Acts 4:13 (ESV)<\/strong>: \u201cNow when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

3. Talents and Gifts<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Natural or spiritual gifts\u2014such as singing, teaching, or leadership\u2014should be used to glorify God and serve others, not to exalt oneself.<\/p>\n

Romans 12:3 (ESV)<\/strong>: \u201cFor by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Gifts are given by grace, not by merit. Pride in gifts leads to division and spiritual arrogance.<\/p>\n

4. Position or Authority<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Leadership roles in the church, workplace, or society can lead to pride if misused. Jesus taught that true greatness lies in humility and servanthood:<\/p>\n

Mark 10:43\u201345 (ESV)<\/strong>: \u201c\u2026whoever would be great among you must be your servant… For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Leaders must remain teachable and accountable, always remembering their authority is entrusted, not earned.<\/p>\n

5. Physical Appearance<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Some people become prideful because of their outward beauty or attractiveness, placing excessive value on looks.<\/p>\n

Proverbs 31:30 (ESV)<\/strong>: \u201cCharm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

True worth comes from inner godliness, not external appearance.<\/p>\n

Consequences of Pride\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

1. God Opposes the Proud<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Pride puts a person in direct opposition to God.<\/p>\n

1 Peter 5:5 (ESV)<\/strong>: \u201cGod opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.\u201d<\/em>
\nJames 4:6 (ESV)<\/strong> echoes the same truth.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Without God\u2019s grace, spiritual progress and victory become impossible.<\/p>\n

2. Pride Leads to Shame<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Pride often ends in humiliation.<\/p>\n

Proverbs 11:2 (ESV)<\/strong>: \u201cWhen pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Proud people frequently fall hard because their inflated self-image is not rooted in truth.<\/p>\n

3. Pride Destroys Families<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Pride can tear apart households when spouses or parents refuse to listen, reconcile, or admit faults.<\/p>\n

Proverbs 15:25 (ESV)<\/strong>: \u201cThe Lord tears down the house of the proud but maintains the widow\u2019s boundaries.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Humility is essential for peace and unity in relationships.<\/p>\n

4. Pride Brings Personal Downfall<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Pride does not elevate\u2014it lowers. God brings down those who exalt themselves.<\/p>\n

Proverbs 29:23 (ESV)<\/strong>: \u201cOne\u2019s pride will bring him low, but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

5. Pride Leads to Judgment and Eternal Loss<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Ultimately, pride leads to spiritual death and separation from God.<\/p>\n

Isaiah 2:12,17 (ESV)<\/strong>:
\n\u201cFor the Lord of hosts has a day against all that is proud and lofty… And the haughtiness of man shall be humbled, and the lofty pride of men shall be brought low, and the Lord alone will be exalted in that day.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Those who die in pride without repentance will not inherit eternal life.<\/p>\n

Additional Signs of Pride<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Pride also expresses itself in arguments, defensiveness, and constant need to be right.<\/p>\n

Proverbs 13:10 (ESV)<\/strong>: \u201cBy insolence comes nothing but strife, but with those who take advice is wisdom.\u201d<\/em>
\nProverbs 21:24 (ESV)<\/strong>: \u201cScoffer is the name of the arrogant, haughty man who acts with arrogant pride.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

How to Guard Against Pride<\/strong><\/h2>\n
    \n
  1. Receive salvation through Jesus Christ<\/strong> \u2013 True humility begins with recognizing your need for a Savior.<\/li>\n
  2. Be filled with the Holy Spirit<\/strong> \u2013 The Spirit produces the fruit of humility and helps you walk in God\u2019s ways.<\/li>\n
  3. Avoid environments that encourage pride<\/strong> \u2013 Be intentional about your influences and community.<\/li>\n
  4. Daily choose humility<\/strong> \u2013 Follow Christ\u2019s example of servanthood.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Philippians 2:5\u20138 (ESV)<\/strong>: \u201cHave this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus\u2026 he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    May the Lord help us to walk in humility and resist the pride that distances us from His grace.<\/strong><\/p>\n
