When Moses asked God to reveal His name in Exodus 3:13, he likely expected something specific perhaps a name like those used for the many gods known in his time, such as Baal or Ashtoreth. Names in ancient cultures carried meaning, identity, and a reflection of the deity\u2019s role or power.<\/p>\n
But God’s response was unlike any other:<\/p>\n
\n“God said to Moses, \u2018I AM WHO I AM.\u2019 And he said, \u2018Say this to the people of Israel: I AM has sent me to you.\u2019\u201d<\/strong>
(Exodus 3:14, ESV)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\nIn the footnotes of most modern translations, this phrase is further clarified to mean:<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI will be what I will be.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
This points to God\u2019s eternal, self-existent, and unchanging nature. The Hebrew phrase \u201cEhyeh Asher Ehyeh\u201d<\/strong> implies that God is not defined by human categories. He is being itself<\/strong>\u2014constant, dependable, and completely sovereign.<\/p>\n
God\u2019s Progressive Revelation<\/h3>\n
At that moment, God gave Moses a glimpse of His divine identity\u2014but it was only the beginning of a fuller revelation.<\/p>\n
Later, in Exodus 6:2\u20133<\/strong>, God says:<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI am the LORD. I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob as God Almighty [El Shaddai], but by my name the LORD [YHWH] I did not make myself fully known to them.\u201d<\/strong>
(Exodus 6:2\u20133, NIV)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\nHere, God introduces YHWH<\/strong> (often transliterated as Yahweh<\/em> or Jehovah<\/em>), a personal name rooted in the same verb as \u201cI AM.\u201d It reveals a God who is relational, covenantal, and faithful<\/strong>. Though the patriarchs had encountered His power (as El Shaddai<\/em>), now Israel would experience His deliverance and covenant fulfillment through YHWH<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
Names of God in Context<\/h3>\n
Throughout Scripture, God continues to reveal His nature through names that match the needs of His people in specific moments. These are often called compound names of Jehovah<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

Jehovah Jireh<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cThe Lord will provide\u201d<\/em> (Genesis 22:14)<\/h2>\n<\/li>\n

These names show us that God\u2019s character is active and present. He meets His people in their need whether in battle, in lack, in fear, or in sorrow. Each name reflects a different aspect of His care, holiness, and nearness.<\/p>\n
The Ultimate Revelation: Jesus<\/h3>\n
The greatest name by which God revealed Himself is through Jesus Christ<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cYou shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.\u201d<\/strong>
(Matthew 1:21, ESV)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\nThe name Jesus<\/em> (Yeshua in Hebrew) literally means \u201cYahweh saves.\u201d<\/strong> In Christ, God fully reveals Himself as the Savior of the world.
Jesus Himself confirmed His divinity by using the phrase \u201cI AM\u201d<\/strong> repeatedly:<\/p>\n\n

\u201cI am the bread of life\u201d<\/strong> (John 6:35)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
- \n
\u201cI am the light of the world\u201d<\/strong> (John 8:12)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

\u201cBefore Abraham was, I AM.\u201d<\/strong> (John 8:58)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
These declarations echoed God\u2019s words to Moses and revealed that Jesus is Yahweh in the flesh <\/strong>God among us (Immanuel<\/em>, Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23).<\/p>\n
\nWhat Does This Mean for Us?<\/h3>\n
God is not limited to a single role or title. He is \u201cI WILL BE WHAT I WILL BE.\u201d<\/strong> This means:<\/p>\n

In your lack<\/strong>, He is your Provider<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

In your pain<\/strong>, He is your Healer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
- \n
In your battles<\/strong>, He is your Banner<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
- \n
In your sin<\/strong>, He is your Savior<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Wherever you are on the mountain, in the valley, in the desert, or lost in sin He is able to reveal Himself to you. You don\u2019t have to limit God to one area of your life. He is present everywhere and in everything.<\/p>\n
\nHave You Met the \u201cI AM\u201d?<\/h3>\n

Before He meets your external needs, God wants to meet your deepest need<\/strong>: salvation from sin.<\/p>\n\n\u201cFor the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.\u201d<\/strong>
(Romans 6:23, ESV)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\nWhen you believe in Jesus, your sins are forgiven, and you receive eternal life. You move from death to life, from judgment to grace.<\/p>\n
