Not Simply Crops vs. Animals<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Levitical Context<\/strong> (later codified in Leviticus):<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Grain offerings<\/strong> (Le 2) symbolized thanksgiving and consecration, requiring \u201cfine flour\u201d and \u201cfirstfruits.\u201d<\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Animal sacrifices<\/strong> (Le 1\u20133) pointed forward to atonement through the shedding of blood (Heb 9:22 NIV).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>The blood principle<\/strong>: Sheep\/goat sacrifices anticipated the necessity of \u201cwithout the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness\u201d (Hebrews 9:22 NIV).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>Theological note:<\/strong> Abel\u2019s offering foreshadows the greater \u201cLamb of God\u201d (John 1:29 ESV), whose \u201cfirstborn\u201d status (Ex 13:2 NIV) and perfect sacrifice reconcile sinners to God.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>2. The Heart of the Giver Matters<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Quality of Gift<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Abel<\/strong>: Gave the <strong>firstborn<\/strong> (Hebrew <em>bikkurim<\/em>) and the <strong>fat<\/strong>\u2014the choicest parts (Gen 4:4 ESV).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Cain<\/strong>: Brought an unspecified portion of his crops\u2014implying leftovers or second-best (Gen 4:3 ESV).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Attitude Behind Gift<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Abel\u2019s offering was rooted in <strong>faith<\/strong>: \u201cBy faith Abel\u2026 offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain\u201d (Heb 11:4 ESV).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Cain\u2019s offering revealed <strong>self-interest<\/strong>\u2014holding the best back from the Lord.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>Theological note:<\/strong> True worship demands <strong>\u201cfirst fruits\u201d<\/strong> (Prov 3:9 NIV)\u2014our best and earliest\u2014to acknowledge God\u2019s ownership of all (Ps 24:1 ESV).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>3. God\u2019s Grace and Cain\u2019s Warning<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Before judgment, God said to Cain:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWhy are you angry?\u2026 If you do well, will you not be accepted?\u2026 but if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door\u2026 you must rule over it\u201d (Gen 4:6\u20137 ESV).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Opportunity for repentance<\/strong>: God\u2019s question \u201cWill you not be accepted?\u201d underscores His <strong>desire for restoration<\/strong>, not mere ritual.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>Theological note:<\/strong> Scripture repeatedly shows God\u2019s patience: \u201cThe Lord is\u2026 patient, not wishing that any should perish but that all should reach repentance\u201d (2 Pet 3:9 ESV).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>4. From Offering to Outrage<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>In resentment, Cain \u201clured Abel\u2026 and killed him\u201d (Gen 4:8 ESV).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Moral slip<\/strong>: A heart hardened against God quickly turns against neighbor (1 John 3:12 NIV).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>Theological note:<\/strong> Sin\u2019s progression\u2014from <strong>neglect<\/strong> (offering second-best) to <strong>murder <\/strong>illustrates James\u2019s warning: \u201cEach person is tempted\u2026 by his own evil desire\u2026 and desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death\u201d (James 1:14\u201315 ESV).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>5.
