Definition of Pride in a Biblical Context<\/p>\n

Pride is more than just confidence or self-esteem. Biblically, pride is an inward attitude of self-exaltation<\/strong> that places one’s own will, desires, or achievements above God’s authority and others\u2019 value. It often leads to rebellion, boasting, and spiritual blindness. It is the root of many other sins.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cGod opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.\u201d<\/em>
\u2014 James 4:6; Proverbs 3:34<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Theologically, pride is the original sin that led to Satan’s fall (Isaiah 14:12\u201315), and it continues to be the heart of rebellion against God.<\/p>\n

\n

1. The Pride of Adonijah (1 Kings 1:5)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Adonijah, one of King David\u2019s sons, provides a clear example of pride fueled by self-ambition. Instead of honoring God’s plan and his father’s authority, he arrogantly declared himself king.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cNow Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, \u2018I will be king.\u2019 And he prepared for himself chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.\u201d<\/em>
\u2014 1 Kings 1:5<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Adonijah\u2019s pride reflects how self-promotion and presumption can lead to judgment and failure. He was ultimately rejected, and Solomon\u2014whom God had chosen\u2014was crowned instead (1 Kings 1:39\u201340). Pride can blind us to divine order.<\/p>\n

2. The Pride of the Israelites (2 Chronicles 36:15\u201317)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Israel repeatedly fell into pride by rejecting God’s commands and persecuting His prophets. Their hearts became hard, and they refused correction.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey mocked God\u2019s messengers, despised His words, and scoffed at His prophets until the wrath of the Lord was aroused against His people and there was no remedy.\u201d<\/em>
\u2014 2 Chronicles 36:16<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cThey became stiff-necked and refused to listen.\u201d<\/em>
\u2014 Nehemiah 9:29<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This shows that pride is often expressed as spiritual stubbornness<\/strong>\u2014a refusal to repent or obey God\u2019s Word. Such arrogance leads to God\u2019s judgment, as seen when He allowed the Babylonians to conquer and exile His people (2 Chronicles 36:17).<\/p>\n

3. The Pride of Moab (Jeremiah 48:29\u201331)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Moab, a neighboring nation of Israel, became infamous for national pride and self-glory. God condemned this attitude.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cWe have heard of Moab\u2019s pride\u2014how great is her arrogance!\u2014of her conceit, her pride and her insolence; but her boasts are empty.\u201d<\/em>
\u2014 Jeremiah 48:29\u201330<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cTherefore I wail over Moab\u2026 I moan for the people of Kir-hareseth.\u201d<\/em>
\u2014 Jeremiah 48:31<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Pride doesn\u2019t just affect individuals\u2014it can destroy entire nations. Moab\u2019s downfall was rooted in its boastful heart. God mourned over them, showing both His justice and compassion (Ezekiel 33:11).<\/p>\n
