Understanding the Passage:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The book of Jude<\/strong> is a short but powerful letter written to warn believers about false teachers and to encourage them to contend for the faith. In verses 22\u201323, Jude gives practical guidance on how to help those who are struggling spiritually:<\/p>\n

  1. Show mercy to the doubting<\/strong> \u2013 those who are unsure of their faith need gentle encouragement (Jude 1:22).<\/li>\n
  2. Rescue those in danger<\/strong> \u2013 some are so entangled in sin that they need urgent, bold intervention, as if pulled from a fire (Jude 1:23a).<\/li>\n
  3. Help others with caution<\/strong> \u2013 for those deep in sin, we are to be compassionate, yet extremely careful\u2014\u201chating even the garment stained by the flesh\u201d (Jude 1:23b).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The phrase \u201cgarment stained by the flesh\u201d<\/em> uses Old Testament purity language<\/strong> to make a spiritual point. In the Mosaic Law, garments that had been defiled\u2014especially by leprosy or bodily discharges\u2014were considered unclean (see Leviticus 13:47\u201359<\/strong> and Numbers 19:11<\/strong>). Touching them could transmit impurity, symbolizing how sin can spread or influence others.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    In New Testament theology<\/strong>, “the flesh” often refers to human sinful nature (Greek: sarx<\/em>). So, the \u201cgarment stained by the flesh\u201d represents external signs or lifestyles of sin resulting from a corrupted inner life. Jude\u2019s instruction, then, is not just to avoid sin, but to hate even the appearance of sin<\/strong> that might cling to someone you’re trying to help.<\/p>\n
