Mark 6:8 \u2013 Understanding God\u2019s Provision for His Servants<\/em><\/p>\n

1. Context of the Passage<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In Mark 6:7\u20138 (NIV)<\/em>, we read:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cCalling the Twelve to him, he began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over impure spirits. These were his instructions: \u2018Take nothing for the journey except a staff no bread, no bag, no money in your belts.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Jesus was sending His disciples out on a mission for the first time. This was both a practical exercise in ministry and a spiritual lesson in dependence on God.<\/p>\n

The term \u201cmoney in your belts\u201d refers to small pouches or leather bags tied around the waist where people kept their coins. It was a normal means of carrying money, like a wallet or purse today.<\/p>\n

2. Why Did Jesus Instruct Them Not to Carry Money or Supplies?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

At first glance, it might seem that Jesus was dismissing the importance of financial resources in ministry. But that\u2019s not the case.<\/p>\n

Jesus was not rejecting the idea that the gospel requires support Scripture consistently affirms the need for material resources in ministry (1 Corinthians 9:13\u201314, Philippians 4:15\u201317<\/em>). Rather, He was teaching the disciples a foundational truth:<\/p>\n

Ministry begins with faith, not resources.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Their mission was not to be hindered by a lack of preparation or wealth. Jesus wanted them to learn that obedience and trust in God’s provision come first.<\/p>\n

This is echoed in Luke 22:35 (ESV)<\/em>, when Jesus reflects back on this moment:<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd he said to them, \u2018When I sent you out with no moneybag or knapsack or sandals, did you lack anything?\u2019 They said, \u2018Nothing.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This shows that God\u2019s provision met them as they went<\/em>, not before they started.<\/p>\n

3. What This Means for Us Today<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Many people feel a strong desire to serve God but hesitate because they feel underqualified, underfunded, or unprepared. Jesus’ instruction reminds us that:<\/p>\n
