{"id":46269,"date":"2025-05-19T12:39:40","date_gmt":"2025-05-19T09:39:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wingulamashahidi.org\/?p=46269"},"modified":"2025-05-19T14:44:10","modified_gmt":"2025-05-19T11:44:10","slug":"46269","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wingulamashahidi.org\/en\/2025\/05\/19\/46269\/","title":{"rendered":"Understanding Proverbs 3:27 \u2013 \u201cDo not withhold good from those to whom it is due\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p><strong>Proverbs 3:27 (ESV)<\/strong> \u2013 <em>\u201cDo not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><strong>What Does This Verse Mean?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This verse from Proverbs offers both a moral and spiritual principle: we are not to withhold acts of kindness, generosity, or justice from those who have a rightful claim to them\u2014<em>especially when we are capable of helping.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There are <strong>two parts<\/strong> to this command:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>\u201cDo not withhold good from those to whom it is due.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cWhen it is in your power to do it.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Let\u2019s unpack these two elements in more detail.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>1. \u201cDo not withhold good from those to whom it is due\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Hebrew phrase here literally implies, <em>&#8220;Do not hold back good from its owners.&#8221;<\/em> In other words, this &#8220;good&#8221; is not charity in the modern sense, where the giver decides whether to give or not\u2014it is a <strong>moral obligation<\/strong>. Some people have a rightful claim to our help.<\/p>\n<h3>Who are the people to whom good is due?<\/h3>\n<h3><strong>a) Biological Family<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Scripture places <strong>primary responsibility on caring for our immediate families.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>1 Timothy 5:8 (ESV)<\/strong> \u2013 <em>\u201cBut if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Neglecting one&#8217;s own family is seen as a betrayal of the Christian faith. Family care is not optional\u2014it\u2019s foundational to biblical responsibility. This includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Elderly parents (see also <strong>Exodus 20:12<\/strong> \u2013 <em>\u201cHonor your father and your mother\u2026\u201d<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li>Children<\/li>\n<li>Siblings<\/li>\n<li>Spouse<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When a family member is in need, <em>helping them is not just generous\u2014it is just.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>b) Fellow Believers (The Household of Faith)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Galatians 6:10 (ESV)<\/strong> \u2013 <em>\u201cSo then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Early Christian communities functioned almost like extended families. They shared their possessions and looked after each other\u2019s needs (<strong>Acts 2:44\u201345<\/strong>). The Apostle John adds that failing to help a brother in need casts doubt on the genuineness of one&#8217;s faith:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>1 John 3:17\u201318 (ESV)<\/strong> \u2013<br \/>\n<em>\u201cBut if anyone has the world\u2019s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God\u2019s love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This also includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Widows<\/strong> in the church who meet the biblical qualifications (see <strong>1 Timothy 5:3\u201310<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Faithful ministers<\/strong> of the gospel who devote themselves to preaching and teaching (see <strong>1 Corinthians 9:14<\/strong> \u2013 <em>\u201cThe Lord commanded that those who proclaim the gospel should get their living by the gospel.\u201d<\/em>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>c) The Poor and Needy<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Bible consistently commands care for the poor, widows, orphans, and the oppressed.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Galatians 2:10 (ESV)<\/strong> \u2013 <em>\u201cOnly, they asked us to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Helping the poor is not an act of superiority but of justice and mercy. God identifies Himself as a defender of the poor:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Proverbs 19:17 (ESV)<\/strong> \u2013 <em>\u201cWhoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Homeless individuals<\/li>\n<li>Disabled persons<\/li>\n<li>Needy neighbors<\/li>\n<li>Strangers in need (see <strong>Deuteronomy 10:18\u201319<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>2. \u201cWhen it is in your power to do it\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This part of the verse introduces <strong>wisdom and boundaries<\/strong>. God does not expect us to give what we do not have. Generosity must be <strong>spirit-led and situationally wise.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>2 Corinthians 8:12\u201313 (ESV)<\/strong> \u2013<br \/>\n<em>\u201cFor if the readiness is there, it is acceptable according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have. For I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Paul clarifies that giving should be based on one&#8217;s ability\u2014not out of guilt or pressure. God honors the <strong>willing heart<\/strong>, not the amount.<\/p>\n<h3>Balance is important:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Don&#8217;t neglect your own household<\/strong> in an effort to help others.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t give beyond your means<\/strong>, unless the Spirit leads and your faith is strong enough to sustain it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don&#8217;t ignore real needs<\/strong> just because you fear running out.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Luke 6:38 (ESV)<\/strong> \u2013 <em>\u201cGive, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap&#8230;\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The principle is this: <strong>God provides more to those who are faithful stewards<\/strong>, knowing they will channel blessings to others.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>Theological Reflection<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This proverb aligns with the biblical themes of <strong>justice, mercy, and stewardship<\/strong>. God is not simply calling us to be &#8220;nice people&#8221;\u2014He is calling us to be agents of His righteousness on earth.
