What Does It Mean to Love the Lord with All Your Heart, Soul, Mind, and Strength?<\/strong> In Mark 12:28\u201330, a teacher of the law asked Jesus which commandment was the greatest:<\/p>\n \u201cThe most important one,\u201d answered Jesus, \u201cis this: \u2018Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.\u2019\u201d<\/em> \u2014 Mark 12:29\u201330 (NIV)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Jesus quotes from Deuteronomy 6:4\u20135<\/strong>, known in Jewish tradition as the Shema<\/strong>, a foundational declaration of God\u2019s oneness and the response of undivided love and devotion.<\/p>\n But what does it actually mean to love God in this total way?<\/p>\n In biblical language, the \u201cheart\u201d (*Hebrew: lev<\/em>) is the center of one\u2019s emotions, will, and desires. To love God with your heart means your affections and motivations are aligned with His will.<\/p>\n Proverbs 4:23<\/strong> \u2014 \u201cAbove all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Matthew 6:21<\/strong> \u2014 \u201cFor where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n This kind of love is not conditional<\/strong>\u2014it\u2019s not about what you can get from God, but about offering yourself to Him. God is not measuring quantity<\/strong>, but sacrifice and sincerity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The \u201cmind\u201d refers to intellect, reasoning, understanding, and the ability to discern truth.
