(A Theological Examination Based on 1 Corinthians 15:5)<\/em><\/p>\n

A question often raised by Bible readers is this: Did Jesus appear to Judas Iscariot after His resurrection?<\/em> This question usually stems from 1 Corinthians 15:5<\/strong>, where the Apostle Paul writes:<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve.\u201d<\/strong>

Given that Judas Iscariot was originally one of the Twelve Apostles, it may seem puzzling at first that Jesus appeared to \u201cthe Twelve\u201d even though Judas had already died by suicide (Matthew 27:5) before the resurrection occurred.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s unpack this both theologically and biblically.<\/p>\n

Understanding the Term \u201cThe Twelve\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In the New Testament, the phrase \u201cthe Twelve\u201d<\/strong> (Greek: hoi d\u014ddeka<\/em>) functions as a title for the core group of apostles appointed by Jesus during His earthly ministry (Luke 6:13-16). It became a collective label, often used even when fewer than twelve were physically present (see John 20:24, where Thomas was absent, yet the group is still referred to as the Twelve).<\/p>\n

Importantly, \u201cthe Twelve\u201d does not always imply the literal presence of all twelve original members at every appearance or event. It denotes the apostolic office and authority<\/strong>, not just a headcount.<\/p>\n

What Happened to Judas?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

According to the Gospels, Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus and was overcome with guilt. In Matthew 27:5 (NIV)<\/strong>, we read:<\/p>\n

\u201cSo Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

His death occurred before<\/strong> the crucifixion was complete, and certainly before the resurrection. Therefore, Judas did not witness or partake in any post resurrection appearances of Jesus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Why Does Paul Say Jesus Appeared to \u201cThe Twelve\u201d?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Paul, in 1 Corinthians 15, is summarizing the resurrection appearances of Jesus to substantiate the truth of the Gospel. Here’s the passage in context:<\/p>\n

1 Corinthians 15:3\u20136 (NIV):<\/strong>
\n3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,
\n4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
\n5 and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve.
\n6 After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time\u2026<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This mention of \u201cthe Twelve\u201d must then refer to the apostolic office after Judas\u2019s replacement <\/strong>that is, after Matthias had been chosen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Matthias Replaces Judas<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Book of Acts records how the apostles, under divine guidance, selected Matthias<\/strong> to replace Judas in the apostolic ministry:<\/p>\n

Acts 1:24\u201326 (NIV):<\/strong>
\n24 Then they prayed, \u201cLord, you know everyone\u2019s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen
\n25 to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.\u201d
\n26 Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

With Matthias added, the apostolic number was restored to twelve. Therefore, when Paul mentions Jesus appearing to \u201cthe Twelve,\u201d he is referring to this restored group<\/strong>, not to the original Twelve including Judas.<\/p>\n
