Shalom, and welcome! Let\u2019s take a moment to learn and remind ourselves of our responsibilities as believers on this journey of faith here on earth.<\/p>\n
There are times when we fail to act for God, telling ourselves, \u201cGod understands.\u201d Yet, Scripture shows that these are excuses<\/em> before Him, hindering our spiritual walk.<\/p>\n Common Understanding vs. Biblical Meaning of \u201cExcuse\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n Typically, an excuse is thought of as a false or deceptive reason to avoid responsibility. For example, if someone asks you to help with a task, and you respond with a made up story to avoid it, that\u2019s a classic excuse.<\/p>\n But the Bible\u2019s teaching is deeper. In Luke 14:16\u201324, Jesus tells a parable where invited guests provide genuine, reasonable reasons for not attending a banquet. These reasons seem valid, yet the host regards them as excuses (Greek: \u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2 \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c3\u03c7\u03ae\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/em>, \u201cpretext\u201d or \u201cjustification\u201d that masks true refusal).<\/p>\n Let\u2019s look at the passage from the NIV<\/strong> and ESV<\/strong>:<\/p>\n Luke 14:16-24 (NIV):<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cA certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, \u2018Come, for everything is now ready.\u2019 But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, \u2018I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.\u2019 Another said, \u2018I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I\u2019m on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.\u2019 Still another said, \u2018I just got married, so I can\u2019t come.\u2019 God\u2019s Invitation Is Holy and Urgent:<\/strong> The banquet symbolizes the Kingdom of God and the call to salvation and fellowship with Him (cf. Matthew 22:2-14).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Excuses Reflect Worldly Priorities:<\/strong> The invited guests prioritize earthly affairs property, possessions, and personal pleasures over God\u2019s invitation. These reflect misplaced values (Colossians 3:2).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n God\u2019s Judgment on Rejection:<\/strong> The host\u2019s anger and the invitation extended to the marginalized (poor, crippled, blind, lame) emphasize that God\u2019s kingdom is open to all who respond, but those who reject Him face exclusion (Matthew 8:11-12).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n No Partiality:<\/strong> The banquet\u2019s fullness symbolizes God\u2019s desire for a full and willing heart (Romans 2:11).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n Modern Application<\/strong><\/p>\n Today, many avoid church or fellowship for seemingly valid reasons: demanding jobs, family commitments, or other responsibilities. They say, \u201cGod understands.\u201d But Scripture warns that such reasoning may be a dangerous excuse, a subtle way of putting worldly priorities above God.<\/p>\n Daniel\u2019s Example:<\/strong> Despite threats from King Darius, Daniel refused to stop praying to God (Daniel 6). His faithfulness, even under persecution, is a model of unwavering devotion.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego:<\/strong> They refused to worship Nebuchadnezzar\u2019s idol, rejecting any excuse for disobedience (Daniel 3). God\u2019s miraculous deliverance affirmed their faith.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n Don\u2019t Deceive Yourself<\/strong><\/p>\n If you serve your company six days a week but neglect God\u2019s day, you risk stealing from God (Malachi 3:8-10).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Don\u2019t let work, family, or material concerns consume your worship time. Prioritize God above all (Matthew 6:33).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Excuses today may exclude you from the wedding feast of the Lamb<\/em> (Revelation 19:9).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n \u201cNot one of those who were invited will taste my banquet.\u201d (Luke 14:24, NIV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Those who place personal interests above God risk missing the eternal joy of His kingdom.<\/p>\n Question to Reflect On:<\/strong> Maranatha!<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n
The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, \u2018Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.\u2019
\u2018Sir,\u2019 the servant said, \u2018what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.\u2019
\u201cThen the master told his servant, \u2018Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full. I tell you, not one of those who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n
