(Galatians 1:14)<\/em><\/p>\n In Swahili, hirimu<\/em> refers to someone in your peer group\u2014someone who is in the same age range. For example, saying “Peter and John are hirimu<\/em>” means that they are of the same age or belong to the same age bracket.<\/p>\n But in biblical usage, hirimu<\/em> can carry broader meaning. It often refers not only to someone of a similar age but more specifically to a young person<\/strong>, often in the stage of youth where learning, strength, and zeal are expected<\/strong>. Biblically, youth is a stage marked by potential for both spiritual growth and responsibility (cf. 1 Timothy 4:12).<\/p>\n Let\u2019s explore this concept through Scripture:<\/p>\n \u201cBut the official told Daniel, \u2018I am afraid of my lord the king, who has assigned your food and drink. Why should he see you looking worse than the other young men your age? The king would then have my head because of you.\u2019\u201d<\/em> In this passage, the Babylonian official expresses concern that Daniel and his friends\u2014young men in royal training\u2014might appear unhealthy compared to their peers (hirimu<\/em>). Here, the term implies young men in the same developmental and educational stage<\/strong>, likely teens being groomed for court service (cf. Daniel 1:4). The implication is that people of the same age are expected to be in similar conditions or pursuits.<\/p>\n \u201cI was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people and was extremely zealous for the traditions of my fathers.\u201d<\/em> Paul reflects on his past before knowing Christ. He was more advanced than most of his hirimu<\/em>\u2014his contemporaries\u2014in legalistic Judaism. This verse highlights two key theological truths:<\/p>\n Religious zeal without Christ<\/strong> can become idolatrous and self-righteous (cf. Romans 10:2\u20134).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Youthful energy can either serve the Kingdom or become a dangerous force when misdirected.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n Paul\u2019s life shows that peer groups (hirimu<\/em>) often become measuring sticks<\/strong>, yet true transformation happens when one\u2019s standard becomes Christ<\/strong>, not human comparison (Philippians 3:7\u20138).<\/p>\n \u201cHe caught a young man from Succoth and questioned him, and the young man wrote down for him the names of the seventy-seven officials of Succoth, the elders of the town.\u201d<\/em> Here, a hirimu<\/em> is capable of literacy and civic awareness. He is able to list names of leaders, indicating that youth in biblical times were expected to be informed and responsible<\/strong>. This supports the biblical ideal that spiritual and civic responsibility<\/strong> is not reserved for the aged alone (cf. The question is: Let us consider a few age-related biblical examples:<\/p>\n \u201cWhen He was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom.\u201d \u2026 \u201cThey found Him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking questions.\u201d<\/em> At just 12 years old, Jesus<\/strong> was deeply engaged in Scripture. \u201cDon\u2019t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers…\u201d<\/em> \u201cNow Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry.\u201d<\/em> At 30, Jesus began public ministry. His age wasn\u2019t just coincidental; in Jewish tradition, 30 was the age of priestly readiness (cf. Numbers 4:3). \u201cNow Moses was eighty years old and Aaron eighty-three when they spoke to Pharaoh.\u201d<\/em> Though Moses thought he was “too late,” God used him powerfully at 80. \u201cRemember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come\u2026\u201d<\/em> This is a universal call to honor God at every stage of life<\/strong>.
