{"id":49207,"date":"2024-08-16T18:05:54","date_gmt":"2024-08-16T15:05:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wingulamashahidi.org\/?p=49207"},"modified":"2025-06-04T14:42:27","modified_gmt":"2025-06-04T11:42:27","slug":"what-is-aramaic-and-did-jesus-speak-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wingulamashahidi.org\/en\/2024\/08\/16\/what-is-aramaic-and-did-jesus-speak-it\/","title":{"rendered":"What Is Aramaic, and Did Jesus Speak It?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">When studying the Bible, we find that three primary languages were used in its composition: <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">Hebrew<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">, <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">Greek<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">, and <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">Aramaic<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Most of the <strong>Old Testament<\/strong> was written in <strong>Hebrew<\/strong>, the sacred language of the Israelites.<\/li>\n<li>A few sections\u2014especially in the books of <strong>Ezra<\/strong> and <strong>Daniel<\/strong>\u2014were written in <strong>Aramaic<\/strong> (Ezra 4:8\u20136:18; Daniel 2:4\u20137:28).<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>New Testament<\/strong> was originally written in <strong>Greek<\/strong>, the common international language of the time, though it contains occasional Aramaic expressions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This shows that while <strong>Aramaic<\/strong> is present in the Bible, it plays a <strong>supporting<\/strong> rather than dominant role.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>The Origin and Spread of Aramaic<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Aramaic originated with the <strong>Arameans<\/strong>, an ancient Semitic people. Their language spread widely and became a lingua franca (common language) across much of the <strong>ancient Near East<\/strong>, including what is now <strong>Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Iraq, and Turkey<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Aramaic became especially dominant during the time of the <strong>Assyrian<\/strong> and <strong>Persian<\/strong> empires (cf. 2 Kings 18:26; Ezra 4:7). It was adopted in governmental and everyday use across many regions.<\/p>\n<p>By the <strong>first century A.D.<\/strong>, Aramaic was the <strong>spoken language<\/strong> of most Jews in <strong>Galilee and Judea<\/strong>, including <strong>Jesus\u2019 hometown of Nazareth<\/strong>. Hebrew remained the language of <strong>Scripture and synagogue worship<\/strong>, but Aramaic was the <strong>heart language of the people<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Did Jesus Speak Aramaic?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Yes\u2014<strong>Jesus spoke Aramaic as His primary language<\/strong>. He likely also understood <strong>Hebrew<\/strong> (for religious purposes, such as reading the Torah\u2014Luke 4:16\u201320) and perhaps <strong>Greek<\/strong> (useful for interaction with Roman authorities and Gentiles).<\/p>\n<p>This is affirmed by the New Testament, where several <strong>Aramaic phrases<\/strong> are preserved and quoted directly:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mark 5:41 :<\/strong> \u201cHe took her by the hand and said to her, <em>\u2018Talitha koum!\u2019<\/em> (which means \u2018Little girl, I say to you, get up!\u2019).\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mark 7:34:<\/strong> \u201cHe looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, <em>\u2018Ephphatha!\u2019<\/em> (which means \u2018Be opened!\u2019).\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mark 15:34:<\/strong> \u201cAnd at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, <em>\u2018Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?\u2019<\/em> (which means \u2018My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?\u2019)\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other notable Aramaic or Hebrew-Aramaic words include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cHosanna\u201d<\/strong> (Matthew 21:9) \u2013 Meaning \u201csave now\u201d or \u201csave, we pray.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cAbba\u201d<\/strong> (Mark 14:36) \u2013 A deeply personal term for father, showing Jesus\u2019 intimate relationship with God.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Why Did Jesus Use Aramaic?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s important to note that <strong>the power was not in the language<\/strong>, but in <strong>the Spirit-filled life of Jesus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus used Aramaic in some specific moments, not because it was more spiritual than Hebrew or Greek, but because <strong>He lived in obedience to the leading of the Holy Spirit<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>John 5:19:<\/strong> <em>\u201cVery truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing&#8230;\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This means that when Jesus healed, taught, or prayed, He wasn&#8217;t following a fixed formula\u2014He was following the Spirit. Sometimes this involved using Aramaic, other times touching people, or using mud, or speaking a word.<\/p>\n<p>His methods varied, but His <strong>dependence on the Holy Spirit<\/strong> never changed.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Romans 8:14:<\/strong> <em>\u201cFor those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Likewise, as believers today, we are called not to imitate the <strong>methods<\/strong>, but to follow the <strong>Spirit<\/strong> who led Jesus. Whether we pray with understanding, with songs, with tears, or in tongues\u2014what matters is being led by God\u2019s Spirit.<\/p>\n<p>This teaches us an important principle: <strong>God does not work through formulas but through relationship<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Zechariah 4:6:<\/strong> <em>\u201cNot by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,\u201d says the Lord Almighty.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Jesus depended on the Holy Spirit, and so should we. When we allow ourselves to be filled and led by the Spirit, He will move through us in different ways\u2014each according to His perfect will.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>1 Corinthians 12:11:<\/strong> <em>\u201cAll these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Yes, <strong>Jesus spoke Aramaic<\/strong>, and some of His most powerful words were spoken in that language.
