God\u2019s Design for Marriage<\/strong><\/p>\n

From the beginning, God’s intention for marriage has been clear: one man and one woman united in covenant love<\/strong>. This is not just a cultural ideal\u2014it is a theological truth rooted in creation.<\/p>\n

Genesis 1:27\u00a0<\/strong>
\n\u201cSo God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Matthew 19:4\u20136\u00a0<\/strong>
\n\u201cHaven\u2019t you read,\u201d he replied, \u201cthat at the beginning the Creator \u2018made them male and female,\u2019 and said, \u2018For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh\u2019? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Jesus reaffirms that the creation model of marriage is still God’s ideal: one man and one woman<\/strong>. Marriage was never designed to include multiple spouses or repeated unions without biblical grounds.<\/p>\n

\n

Polygamy and Serial Marriages: Outside God\u2019s Will<\/strong><\/h3>\n

While it is true that some biblical figures, such as David and Solomon, had many wives, this was never endorsed by God<\/strong>. In fact, the consequences of their polygamy are clearly recorded in Scripture.<\/p>\n

1 Kings 11:1\u20134\u00a0<\/strong>
\n\u201cKing Solomon, however, loved many foreign women\u2026 He had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines, and his wives led him astray.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

God permitted it as part of His permissive will, not His perfect will. Just because something is recorded in Scripture does not mean it is prescribed by God.<\/p>\n

Even for kings, God gave clear instruction:<\/p>\n

Deuteronomy 17:17\u00a0<\/strong>
\n\u201cNeither shall he multiply wives for himself, lest his heart turn away\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Polygamy\u2014both ancient and modern\u2014leads hearts away from the Lord.<\/p>\n

\n

The Samaritan Woman: A Lesson on True Marriage<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In John 4<\/strong>, Jesus encounters a woman who had been in multiple relationships. Instead of shaming her, He lovingly calls her to a deeper truth:<\/p>\n

John 4:16\u201318\u00a0<\/strong>
\n\u201cHe told her, \u2018Go, call your husband and come back.\u2019
\n\u2018I have no husband,\u2019 she replied.
\nJesus said to her, \u2018You are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Jesus didn\u2019t recognize her string of past relationships as valid marriages. He didn\u2019t say, \u201cGo call your husbands.\u201d<\/em> He said, \u201cGo call your husband\u201d<\/em>\u2014singular. This affirms that true marriage, in God’s eyes, is monogamous<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n

Marriage Reflects Christ and the Church<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Marriage is not just about companionship or procreation. It is a living picture of Christ\u2019s relationship with the Church<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Ephesians 5:31\u201332<\/strong>
\n\u201c\u2018For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.\u2019 This is a profound mystery\u2014but I am talking about Christ and the church.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Christ has one Bride\u2014the Church<\/strong>, not many. Therefore, Christian marriage should reflect that spiritual reality: one husband, one wife, in unity and holiness.<\/p>\n

\n

What About Serial Marriages?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Many today believe that moving from one marriage to another is acceptable as long as it’s legal. But biblically, remarriage without biblical grounds (such as sexual immorality or abandonment by an unbelieving spouse) is equivalent to adultery<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Luke 16:18\u00a0<\/strong>
\n\u201cAnyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This is why Jesus told the Samaritan woman she had five husbands\u2014she had been through serial relationships, none of which aligned with God’s standard.<\/p>\n

\n

The Cost: Missing the Water of Life<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Polygamy and unrepented serial relationships can hinder our relationship with Christ<\/strong>, who is the Living Water.<\/p>\n

John 4:13\u201314\u00a0<\/strong>
\n\u201cJesus answered, \u2018Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

To receive this eternal life, we must come to Jesus in truth and repentance, surrendering every part of our lives\u2014including our relationships.<\/p>\n

\n

Hope and Healing in Christ<\/strong><\/h3>\n

If you find yourself in a polygamous or unbiblical marital situation, know this: Jesus does not condemn you\u2014He invites you to new life<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

John 8:11\u00a0<\/strong>
\n\u201cThen neither do I condemn you,\u201d Jesus declared. \u201cGo now and leave your life of sin.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

There is grace available through repentance, and God offers restoration when we walk in obedience to His Word.<\/p>\n

\n

The Eternal Marriage Feast<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Those who remain faithful to God\u2019s will\u2014both spiritually and relationally\u2014are invited to the eternal wedding banquet in heaven.<\/p>\n

Revelation 22:1\u20135\u00a0<\/strong>
\n\u201cThen the angel showed me the river of the water of life\u2026 flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb\u2026 The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him\u2026 They will reign for ever and ever.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Let us live now in a way that prepares us for that glorious day.<\/p>\n

May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ cover us, correct us, and guide us into His holy truth. Amen.<\/strong><\/p>\n
