There\u2019s a widespread misconception in the Church today that living a holy life means strictly obeying a long list of religious rules. The assumption is that holiness equals legalism, a form of spiritual bondage. But Scripture paints a very different picture. The Bible clearly teaches that “we are not under law but under grace” (Romans 6:14), and that our righteousness comes not from works, but by faith in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:8-9).<\/p>\n
Yet this misunderstanding persists, causing many to view holiness as an impossible standard\u2014something only achievable by spiritual elites or those under harsh discipline. But what if holiness isn\u2019t about rule-keeping at all? What if it is a natural outflow of a transformed heart?<\/p>\n
Understanding Holiness Beyond Legalism<\/strong><\/p>\n Let\u2019s begin with some natural examples:<\/p>\n If you accidentally touch a hot stove, you immediately pull your hand away\u2014not because of a law you memorized, but because your body instinctively protects itself.<\/p>\n If something suddenly flies toward your eyes, you blink without thinking.<\/p>\n When startled, your heart races involuntarily.<\/p>\n These reflexes aren\u2019t conscious decisions; they\u2019re built-in responses designed to preserve your well-being. They happen automatically, not because of a written code, but because of the internal wiring of your body.<\/p>\n In the same way, when a believer has been genuinely born again and filled with the Holy Spirit, holiness becomes an instinctive spiritual response, not a burdensome obligation.<\/p>\n Holiness as the Fruit of Inner Transformation<\/p>\n True holiness is not legalism\u2014it\u2019s the evidence of a changed nature. That\u2019s why someone filled with the Holy Spirit finds that holy living flows from grace, not toward it.<\/p>\n Why Some Struggle to Live Holy Lives<\/strong><\/p>\n The root issue is often a misunderstanding of what salvation entails. Many have been taught that following Jesus requires no real surrender\u2014that you can \u201cbelieve\u201d without repentance, without denying yourself, and without being filled with the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n Jesus said plainly:<\/p>\n If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.<\/em><\/p>\n Luke 9:23 (NKJV)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n You cannot expect the fruit of the Spirit without the surrender of the flesh.
