2 Peter 1:3 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cHis divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This verse opens our eyes to one of the most powerful truths in the Christian life: God has already given us everything we need<\/strong>\u2014not some things, but everything<\/em>\u2014for both life<\/strong> and godliness<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The word “divine power” here comes from the Greek dynamis<\/em>, meaning strength, power, or ability. It refers to God\u2019s own supernatural energy<\/strong> and capacity to act<\/strong>. It\u2019s the same power Paul refers to in Ephesians 1:19-20<\/strong>, when he says:<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026His incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength He exerted when He raised Christ from the dead\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This is not human power or moral effort\u2014it is resurrection power<\/strong>. And here in 2 Peter 1:3, we learn that this very power has already been given to us, enabling us to live as God intends.<\/p>\n

1. God\u2019s Power for Life<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The first area this power affects is life<\/strong>. The word used here refers to spiritual life<\/strong>\u2014the Zoe<\/em> life of God\u2014not just biological existence, but eternal life. Through the knowledge of Jesus, we have access to forgiveness of sins, new birth, and eternal life<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Jesus said in John 5:24 (NIV):<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cVery truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Salvation is not earned. It is not attained through good works, rituals, or religious observance. Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV)<\/strong> reminds us:<\/p>\n

\u201cFor it is by grace you have been saved, through faith\u2014and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God\u2014not by works, so that no one can boast.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This divine life cannot be obtained through effort or morality. It is received by grace through faith in Jesus Christ<\/strong>, who alone has secured our salvation through His death and resurrection.<\/p>\n

John 3:36 (NIV)<\/strong> puts it plainly:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God\u2019s wrath remains on them.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

When we believe in Him, we are given eternal life<\/strong>. This is the foundation of the Christian walk.<\/p>\n

2. God\u2019s Power for Godliness<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The second area of divine empowerment is godliness<\/strong>, which means living a life that reflects God’s holiness and character<\/em>. It\u2019s not just about doing good things\u2014it\u2019s about being transformed from within<\/strong> by the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n

Without the Holy Spirit working in a person\u2019s life, true godliness is impossible. The natural man, no matter how moral he may try to be, lacks the inward transformation that comes through regeneration.<\/p>\n

Titus 3:5 (NIV)<\/strong> says:<\/p>\n

\u201cHe saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Before Christ, we may try to live holy lives in our own strength, but without success\u2014or we end up becoming legalistic and hypocritical, like the Pharisees. Jesus rebuked them in Matthew 23:27 (NIV)<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

\u201cWoe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But the person who is born again<\/strong> and truly yields to Christ receives the indwelling Holy Spirit, who produces fruit and empowers righteous living.<\/p>\n

Galatians 5:22-23 (NIV)<\/strong> shows us the fruit of godliness:<\/p>\n

\u201cBut the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Holiness is not an optional add-on for believers\u2014it is the evidence of true salvation. Without holiness, there is no eternal life<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Hebrews 12:14 (NIV):<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cMake every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

3. This Power Works Through Relationship<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Notice again that this power is available to us through the knowledge of Him<\/strong> (2 Peter 1:3). The word \u201cknowledge\u201d (epignosis<\/em> in Greek) means not just intellectual awareness, but personal, experiential knowledge<\/strong> of Christ. It is through intimate relationship with Jesus<\/strong> that we are transformed.<\/p>\n

John 1:12 (NIV):<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cYet to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

True faith produces transformation. When we confess Jesus as Lord<\/strong>, we declare ourselves as His servants<\/strong>. Servants don\u2019t argue with their Master\u2014they obey. If you won\u2019t surrender to Christ\u2019s Lordship, your confession is only lip service.<\/p>\n

Jesus said in Luke 6:46 (NIV):<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWhy do you call me, \u2018Lord, Lord,\u2019 and do not do what I say?\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

4. Holiness Is Our Identity<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Holiness isn\u2019t a side issue in the Christian life. It is our identity<\/strong> in Christ.<\/p>\n

1 Peter 1:15-16 (NIV):<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cBut just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: \u2018Be holy, because I am holy.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

If God has called you to eternal life, He has also called you to be holy. And the same divine power that gives you eternal life is the same power<\/strong> that enables you to walk in holiness.<\/p>\n

Final Encouragement<\/strong><\/h3>\n

So, examine your heart. Have you truly received this divine power<\/strong> in your life? Have you been empowered for both life and godliness<\/strong>?<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t settle for a faith that\u2019s only in words. True faith produces both eternal life and<\/strong> the fruit of holiness. The same grace that saves you is the grace that empowers you to live<\/strong> for Christ.<\/p>\n

Philippians 2:13 (NIV):<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cFor it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Let that power work fully in your life.<\/p>\n
