The Question:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Bible tells us not to curse others (Romans 12:14). Yet in some of Paul\u2019s letters\u2014particularly to the Galatians<\/strong> and Corinthians<\/strong>\u2014he uses language that sounds very strong, even as if he\u2019s cursing someone. So, did Paul contradict the teachings of Christ and the apostles by cursing people?<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s take a closer look.<\/p>\n

The Verses in Question<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Galatians 1:8\u20139\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cBut even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God\u2019s curse! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God\u2019s curse!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

1 Corinthians 16:22\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIf anyone does not love the Lord, let that person be cursed! Come, Lord!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

These verses raise questions. Is Paul issuing a personal curse? Is this consistent with the New Testament ethic of love, grace, and forgiveness?<\/p>\n

\n

Context: What Was Paul Responding To?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Paul was fiercely defending the purity of the gospel<\/strong>\u2014that salvation comes by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone<\/strong>, not by works or the Law.<\/p>\n

Ephesians 2:8\u20139\u00a0<\/strong>
\n\u201cFor it is by grace you have been saved, through faith\u2014and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God\u2014not by works, so that no one can boast.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In Galatia<\/strong>, some Jewish Christians were teaching that salvation required faith in Christ plus adherence to the Law of Moses<\/strong>, especially circumcision. Paul saw this as a serious distortion of the gospel<\/strong>\u2014one that could destroy people’s faith.<\/p>\n

So when Paul says, \u201clet them be under God\u2019s curse,\u201d he\u2019s not personally cursing anyone. He\u2019s stating that anyone\u2014human or angelic\u2014who preaches a different gospel<\/strong> has already placed themselves under God\u2019s judgment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This isn’t an emotional outburst.<\/p>\n

\n

What Does \u201cCurse\u201d Mean Here?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Greek word Paul uses is \u201canathema\u201d<\/strong>\u2014which means someone or something devoted to destruction<\/strong> or set apart for divine judgment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

So Galatians 1:8 could be paraphrased:<\/p>\n

\u201cEven if I, or an angel from heaven, preach a different gospel, they should be considered as someone under God’s judgment.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This is a statement about God\u2019s justice<\/strong>, not human revenge. Paul isn’t calling down a curse\u2014he\u2019s warning of the inevitable spiritual consequences<\/strong> of abandoning the true gospel.<\/p>\n

\n

But Didn\u2019t Paul Tell Us Not to Curse?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Yes, and he practiced what he preached.<\/p>\n

Romans 12:14<\/strong>
\n\u201cBless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This verse, written by Paul himself, makes it clear that believers should never personally curse others. Instead, we are to show love even to those who oppose us.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, Paul expressed deep compassion and sorrow for those who were lost:<\/p>\n

Romans 10:1\u00a0<\/strong>
\n\u201cBrothers and sisters, my heart\u2019s desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Even when people were far from the truth, Paul\u2019s response was prayer\u2014not revenge.<\/p>\n

\n

So What Was Paul Actually Doing in These Verses?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

He was making a theological statement, not pronouncing a personal curse.<\/strong>
\nPaul was warning that those who reject or distort the gospel are already under God\u2019s judgment<\/strong>, unless they repent.<\/p>\n

This aligns with what he wrote elsewhere:<\/p>\n

Galatians 3:10\u00a0<\/strong>
\n\u201cFor all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, as it is written: \u2018Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.\u2019\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In other words, anyone trying to be justified by the Law rather than by faith is putting themselves under a curse\u2014not because Paul cursed them, but because they’re stepping out from under God\u2019s grace<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n

What\u2019s the Application for Us Today?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

We live in a time when false teachings and gospel distortions are still common. Like Paul, we must be clear and bold<\/strong> in defending the truth of the gospel. But we must also be careful not to take Paul\u2019s strong language as permission to curse others.<\/p>\n

Instead, we\u2019re called to:<\/p>\n
