Today, we study two short but deeply prophetic books: <strong>Joel<\/strong> and <strong>Obadiah<\/strong>. Though brief in length, their spiritual depth and relevance are profound.<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udcdd <em>Note: This is a summary meant to guide your study. Always read the full Bible texts and ask the Holy Spirit to open your understanding (John 16:13).<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>\ud83d\udcd6 <strong>THE BOOK OF JOEL<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Author<\/strong>: Joel (Hebrew: <em>Yo&#8217;el<\/em> \u2013 \u201cYahweh is God\u201d)<br \/>\n<strong>Date<\/strong>: Likely during the reign of King Uzziah (ca. 800s BC)<br \/>\n<strong>Main Theme<\/strong>: <strong>The Day of the Lord \u2013 Judgment and Restoration<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Chapters<\/strong>: 3<\/p>\n<h4>\ud83d\udd39 <strong>Chapter 1: A Warning Through Disaster<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Joel opens by describing a devastating <strong>locust plague<\/strong>, symbolizing God\u2019s judgment on Judah (Joel 1:4). The plague left nothing untouched\u2014signifying that sin has total consequences if unrepented.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Joel 1:4<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cWhat the locust swarm has left the great locusts have eaten&#8230;\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">This is a <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">type<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\"> of divine chastisement. God often used natural disasters in the Old Testament as physical signs of <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">spiritual decay<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\"> (see Amos 4:9\u201310). Joel calls everyone\u2014from priests to common people\u2014to repentance.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Joel 1:14<\/strong>\u2013 \u201cConsecrate a fast; call a solemn assembly&#8230; and cry out to the Lord.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>\ud83d\udd39 <strong>Chapter 2: God\u2019s Call to Repentance and Promise of Restoration<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Joel warns of an approaching <strong>&#8220;Day of the Lord&#8221;<\/strong>, portrayed as an invading army (Joel 2:1\u201311), but this symbolizes more than just Babylon or Assyria\u2014it\u2019s a prophetic picture of <strong>final judgment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Yet God extends <strong>grace<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Joel 2:12\u201313<\/strong>\u2013 \u201c&#8217;Yet even now,&#8217; declares the Lord, &#8216;return to me with all your heart&#8230; Rend your hearts and not your garments.&#8217;\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>True repentance involves <strong>inner transformation<\/strong>, not just outward rituals (see Psalm 51:17). God desires <strong>brokenness over sin<\/strong>, not empty ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>God then promises <strong>restoration<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Joel 2:25<\/strong>\u2013 \u201cI will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten&#8230;\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And also gives a <strong>messianic and Pentecostal prophecy<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Joel 2:28<\/strong>\u2013 \u201cI will pour out my Spirit on all people&#8230;\u201d<br \/>\nFulfilled in <strong>Acts 2:16\u201317<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Peter confirms, \u201cThis is what was uttered through the prophet Joel&#8230;\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is a <strong>key passage<\/strong> linking Old Testament prophecy to New Testament reality. The outpouring of the Holy Spirit marks the beginning of the <strong>Church Age<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>\ud83d\udd39 <strong>Chapter 3: Judgment for the Nations, Restoration for Israel<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>God proclaims judgment on the nations who harmed His people (Joel 3:2\u20138), particularly for crimes like <strong>enslavement, division of land, and desecration of God\u2019s temple<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Joel 3:2<\/strong>\u2013 \u201cI will gather the armies of the world into the Valley of Jehoshaphat&#8230; for harming my people.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">God is <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">just<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">\u2014He will judge both individuals and nations. This foreshadows the final judgment (cf. Revelation 20:11\u201315).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But God also declares the ultimate <strong>restoration and deliverance of His people<\/strong>, pointing to both the post-exilic return and the millennial kingdom under Christ.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Joel 3:16\u201317<\/strong>\u2013 \u201cThe Lord also will roar from Zion&#8230; So you shall know that I am the Lord your God&#8230;\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>\ud83d\udcd6 <strong>THE BOOK OF OBADIAH<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Author<\/strong>: Obadiah (means \u201cServant of Yahweh\u201d)<br \/>\n<strong>Chapters<\/strong>: 1<br \/>\n<strong>Main Theme<\/strong>: <strong>Judgment on Edom and the Sovereignty of God<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>\ud83d\udd39 <strong>Background on Edom<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Edom descended from <strong>Esau<\/strong>, Jacob\u2019s twin brother (Genesis 25:30). Despite this family bond, Edom held a long-standing hostility toward Israel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Obadiah rebukes Edom<\/strong> for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rejoicing over Israel\u2019s fall,<\/li>\n<li>Aiding foreign invaders (likely Babylon),<\/li>\n<li>Betraying survivors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Obadiah 1:10<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 \u201cBecause of the violence against your brother Jacob, you will be covered with shame; you will be destroyed forever.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Obadiah 1:12<\/strong>\u2013 \u201cYou should not have gloated when they suffered such misfortune&#8230;\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Edom\u2019s sin was rooted in <strong>pride and betrayal<\/strong>. God abhors <strong>treachery<\/strong>, especially among those with close relational ties (see Proverbs 6:16\u201319).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>\ud83d\udd39 <strong>God\u2019s Judgment on Edom<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Edom trusted in its high mountainous cities and alliances, thinking they were untouchable.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Obadiah 1:3\u20134<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 \u201cYou who live in the clefts of the rock&#8230; Though you soar aloft like the eagle&#8230; I will bring you down.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Pride is the root of many sins (Proverbs 16:18). Edom became a <strong>symbol of human arrogance<\/strong>, and its downfall is a warning to all who oppose God&#8217;s purposes.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>\ud83d\udd39 <strong>The Day of the Lord and Final Restoration<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Obadiah echoes Joel in declaring <strong>the Day of the Lord<\/strong> as a time when <strong>all nations will be judged<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Obadiah 1:15<\/strong>\u2013 \u201cFor the day of the Lord is near, against all the nations.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Obadiah ends on a note of hope: <strong>Israel will be restored<\/strong>, and <strong>God will reign<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Obadiah 1:21<\/strong>\u2013 \u201cAnd the kingdom shall be the Lord\u2019s.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>God\u2019s sovereignty will be fully established.
