ANSWER:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The phrase \u201cpoor in spirit\u201d refers to spiritual humility\u2014not spiritual ignorance or lack of understanding. In biblical terms, poverty of spirit means recognizing one’s spiritual bankruptcy apart from God. It is the heart posture of someone who knows they have nothing of eternal value to offer without God’s grace.<\/p>\n

In this context, Jesus is highlighting the kind of heart that is totally dependent on God. Being \u201cpoor in spirit\u201d is foundational to entering God\u2019s kingdom because it acknowledges that salvation is by grace, not by our own efforts. As Ephesians 2:8\u20139 (NKJV) says:<\/p>\n

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,<\/em><\/p>\n

not of works, lest anyone should boast.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Jesus was not blessing the spiritually indifferent or unaware. Instead, He was blessing those who are constantly aware of their need for God\u2019s help, wisdom, and presence. Such people don\u2019t presume to have \u201carrived.\u201d They long to grow deeper in their knowledge of Christ, His Word, and His kingdom. This spiritual hunger is echoed in Matthew 5:6 (NKJV):<\/p>\n

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

On the other hand, spiritual pride\u2014the belief that one has nothing more to learn\u2014closes the door to growth and intimacy with God. That was the sin of the Pharisees and scribes. Despite their knowledge of the Scriptures, they rejected Jesus because their hearts were hardened by self-righteousness. They refused to acknowledge their need for a Savior.<\/p>\n

To be \u201cpoor in spirit\u201d is not to lack knowledge, but to recognize that all spiritual wisdom, strength, and righteousness come from God\u2014not ourselves.
