Let\u2019s take a moment to examine a powerful and sobering teaching from our Lord Jesus Christ, found in Luke 13:1\u20135 (NKJV):<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cThere were present at that season some who told Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. And Jesus answered and said to them, \u2018Do you suppose that these Galileans were worse sinners than all other Galileans, because they suffered such things? I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them, do you think that they were worse sinners than all other men who dwelt in Jerusalem? I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n In Jesus\u2019 day, this story was headline news. Pilate \u2014 the Roman governor \u2014 had ordered the slaughter of certain Galilean Jews<\/strong> while they were offering sacrifices at the temple. Their own blood<\/strong> was mixed with the blood of the animals<\/strong> they were offering to God. That would have been seen as not just a political atrocity, but a spiritual desecration.<\/p>\n Why did Pilate do this? Scripture doesn\u2019t tell us his exact motives, but historically, Pilate was known to be a cruel and politically paranoid leader (see Luke 3:1; also supported by external Roman historians like Josephus). Perhaps he feared an uprising or suspected the Galileans of sedition. Galilee was often seen as a hotspot for revolutionaries.<\/p>\n Regardless of the reason, the act was brutal<\/strong>, and the people who witnessed or heard about it naturally began to speculate<\/strong>: \u201cMaybe those people were especially sinful… Maybe God was punishing them.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n But Jesus flipped their assumption on its head.<\/strong><\/p>\n The crowd assumed that tragedy = divine punishment<\/strong>, a common Jewish belief based on Deuteronomy 28\u201329, where blessings followed obedience and curses followed disobedience. Even Job\u2019s friends thought this way: if you\u2019re suffering, you must have sinned (Job 4:7\u20138). But Jesus makes it crystal clear:<\/p>\n \u201cDo you suppose they were worse sinners?\u201d<\/em> He then gives another example \u2014 18 people killed when a tower collapsed in Siloam (possibly part of a Roman aqueduct). Were they the worst sinners in Jerusalem? Again, no.<\/strong><\/p>\n Jesus corrects a dangerous theological misunderstanding: not every tragedy is a direct punishment for personal sin. Sometimes people suffer simply because we live in a fallen, broken world (Romans 8:20\u201322).<\/strong><\/p>\n But here\u2019s the striking part: Jesus doesn\u2019t explain why<\/em> bad things happen. Instead, He gives a warning<\/strong>:<\/p>\n \u201cUnless you repent, you will all likewise perish.\u201d<\/em> (Luke 13:3, 5)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n The Greek word used here for \u201cperish\u201d (apollymi<\/em>) means to be utterly destroyed \u2014 not just physically, but spiritually and eternally. Jesus is not only talking about physical death<\/em> \u2014 He is pointing to eternal separation from God<\/strong> (see Matthew 10:28, Luke 12:5).<\/p>\n In other words, the question is not, \u201cWhy did they die that way?\u201d Jesus was making a call to personal repentance<\/strong> \u2014 not to satisfy curiosity about someone else\u2019s judgment, but to provoke self-examination.<\/p>\n Romans 3:23 (NKJV):<\/strong> \u201cFor all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.\u201d<\/em> So Jesus is saying: \u201cDon\u2019t look at their tragedy and assume they deserved it. Look at your life, because if you don\u2019t repent \u2014 you too will face judgment.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Let\u2019s bring this closer to home.<\/p>\n When disasters strike \u2014 earthquakes, floods, fatal accidents, pandemics \u2014 we sometimes think, \u201cThose people must have done something wrong. Maybe God was judging them.\u201d<\/em> But Jesus says, \u201cNo.\u201d<\/strong> Instead, ask yourself: Have I repented? Am I right with God?<\/em><\/p>\n Think of:<\/p>\n The Kagera earthquake<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n The hailstorm in Geita<\/strong> that killed many<\/p>\n<\/li>\n The MV Bukoba<\/strong> tragedy<\/p>\n<\/li>\n The 2020 pandemic<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n Or even the tsunami of 2004<\/strong> that claimed hundreds of thousands of lives<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n Do we really believe that all those who died were worse sinners than us? No.<\/strong> 2 Peter 3:9 (NKJV):<\/strong> The fact that you are still alive is not because you\u2019re better than the one who died yesterday. It\u2019s because God is giving you time to repent<\/strong> \u2014 time to turn to Him, receive forgiveness, and bear fruit worthy of salvation (Matthew 3:8).<\/p>\n If you were to die today \u2014 suddenly, without warning \u2014 would you be ready to stand before God? John 3:3:<\/strong> \u201cUnless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n This is not a call to fear \u2014 it\u2019s a call to faith<\/strong>. God is calling you today:<\/p>\n \u201cCome now, and let us reason together,\u201d says the Lord, \u201cThough your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow…\u201d<\/em> (Isaiah 1:18)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Conclusion:<\/strong> \u201cUnless you repent, you will all likewise perish.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Come to Christ while there is still time.<\/strong> \u00a0<\/p>\n\n
