{"id":52408,"date":"2020-03-05T22:51:31","date_gmt":"2020-03-05T19:51:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wingulamashahidi.org\/?p=52408"},"modified":"2025-07-10T19:46:14","modified_gmt":"2025-07-10T16:46:14","slug":"is-it-a-sin-to-be-in-a-relationship-before-marriage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wingulamashahidi.org\/en\/2020\/03\/05\/is-it-a-sin-to-be-in-a-relationship-before-marriage\/","title":{"rendered":"Is It a Sin to Be in a Relationship Before Marriage?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">Being in a relationship before marriage is not automatically sinful \u2014 but <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">it becomes sin depending on how that relationship is handled<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>1. <strong>Courtship vs. Sexual Relationship<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>There\u2019s a <strong>clear difference<\/strong> between a respectful <strong>courtship<\/strong> and a <strong>sexual or emotionally intimate relationship<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A couple who is in courtship can:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Talk openly,<\/li>\n<li>Spend time together in public or with family,<\/li>\n<li>Plan for their future marriage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But they must <strong>not engage in any sexual activity<\/strong> \u2014 including touching, kissing romantically, sleeping together, or any behavior that stirs lust or mimics marriage.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>1 Thessalonians 4:3\u20135\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>\u201cFor this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality; that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, not in passion of lust, like the Gentiles who do not know God.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>God\u2019s will for every believer is <strong>purity<\/strong>. This includes how we handle our emotions and physical boundaries during courtship.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>2. <strong>Why Is It Called \u201cThe Marriage Act\u201d?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Sex is called <strong>\u201cthe marriage act\u201d<\/strong> because it is intended <strong>only for those who are already married<\/strong>. It is part of the covenant that seals a couple spiritually, emotionally, and physically before God.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you say, <em>\u201cWe\u2019re going to get married anyway,\u201d<\/em> that does not give you permission to sleep together before the wedding.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Hebrews 13:4\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>\u201cMarriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>God honors sex <strong>only within the covenant of marriage<\/strong>. Outside of that, it becomes <strong>fornication<\/strong> (if unmarried) or <strong>adultery<\/strong> (if one is married to someone else).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>3. <strong>Intentions Don\u2019t Cancel Sin<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Many people justify premarital sex by saying, <em>\u201cWe\u2019re already engaged,\u201d<\/em> or <em>\u201cWe plan to get married soon.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But let\u2019s be clear: <strong>good intentions do not erase sin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>If a man sleeps with a prostitute and says, <em>\u201cOne day I\u2019ll marry her,\u201d<\/em> does that make it right? Of course not. Sin is not judged by intention but by <strong>obedience to God\u2019s Word<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Proverbs 14:12\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>\u201cThere is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>4. <strong>What Kind of Marriage Does God Bless?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>God blesses marriages that are established <strong>in Christ<\/strong>, meaning:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In the Church,<\/li>\n<li>Under spiritual authority,<\/li>\n<li>Through prayer and agreement with God\u2019s will.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Marriages outside of Christ \u2014 whether traditional, legal, or cultural \u2014 may carry human legitimacy but <strong>lack divine approval<\/strong> if they contradict God\u2019s Word.<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Some allow <strong>multiple wives<\/strong>,<\/li>\n<li>Others allow <strong>divorce at any time<\/strong>,<\/li>\n<li>Some include <strong>ancestral rituals or sacrifices<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are not part of God\u2019s plan for marriage.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Genesis 2:24\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>\u201cTherefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Jesus also affirmed this in <strong>Matthew 19:4\u20136<\/strong>, emphasizing <strong>monogamy<\/strong>, <strong>permanence<\/strong>, and <strong>God\u2019s union<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>5. <strong>The Danger of Rushing Ahead<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>When people ignore God\u2019s timing and enter into sexual relationships before marriage, the consequences are often painful:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Broken relationships,<\/li>\n<li>Unwanted pregnancies,<\/li>\n<li>Children raised without both parents,<\/li>\n<li>Guilt and spiritual distance from God.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Many couples who start with premarital sex never reach the altar. Or if they do, they carry wounds that affect the future marriage.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Galatians 6:7\u20138\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>\u201cDo not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>6. <strong>Is There Hope If You&#8217;ve Already Fallen?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Yes! If you&#8217;ve already crossed the line \u2014 even if you\u2019ve had a child \u2014 <strong>God offers forgiveness<\/strong>. But repentance must be genuine.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Stop the sexual relationship immediately.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Confess your sins to God and ask for His mercy.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Begin planning for a proper Christian wedding.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That\u2019s when God\u2019s grace and blessing will begin to cover your home.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>1 John 1:9\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>\u201cIf we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>7. <strong>What If You Refuse to Change?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If you continue in premarital sex, regardless of your plans to marry, <strong>you are living in sin<\/strong> \u2014 and sin separates you from God.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>1 Corinthians 6:9\u201310<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>\u201cDo you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God?<br \/>\nDo not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers&#8230; will inherit the kingdom of God.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>\u2705 <strong>Final Encouragement<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Do things God\u2019s way. Wait. Honor your body and your partner. Set boundaries. Get married <strong>in Christ<\/strong>.
