When Job was struck by devastating loss\u2014his wealth, his health, and even his children\u2014he turned to his grieving wife and said:<\/p>\n
\u201cShall we indeed accept good from God, and shall we not accept adversity?\u201d<\/strong>
\n(Job 2:10, NKJV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\nThis raises a deep theological question:
\nDo times of trouble also come from God? Or does God only give us what is pleasant?<\/strong><\/p>\n
\nTHE ANSWER:<\/strong><\/h3>\n
Let\u2019s read the full verse in Job 2:10 (NKJV):<\/strong><\/p>\n
\u201cBut he said to her, \u2018You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. Shall we indeed accept good from God, and shall we not accept adversity?\u2019 In all this Job did not sin with his lips.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Job’s response shows a mature understanding of God\u2019s sovereignty. He acknowledges that God is in control of all things<\/strong>, not just the good, but also the difficult. Importantly, Job did not accuse God of wrongdoing<\/strong>\u2014he trusted that God had a purpose, even if he didn\u2019t understand it at the time.<\/p>\n
\nDOES GOD SEND EVIL?<\/strong><\/h2>\n
It\u2019s critical to understand that God is not the author of evil<\/strong>. Scripture affirms this:<\/p>\n
\u201cLet no one say when he is tempted, \u2018I am tempted by God\u2019; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone.\u201d
\n(James 1:13, NKJV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\nGod may permit<\/strong> adversity, suffering, or testing\u2014but He does not produce moral evil. Evil arises from the fallen world, human sin, and the activity of Satan. However, God sovereignly uses<\/strong> even painful circumstances for His redemptive purposes.<\/p>\n
This is seen clearly in Joseph\u2019s story<\/strong>:<\/p>\n
\u201cBut as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive.\u201d
\n(Genesis 50:20, NKJV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
\nPURPOSE IN SUFFERING<\/strong><\/h2>\n
Adversity is often God\u2019s tool for transformation<\/strong>. What seems like loss may be preparation for greater gain. God\u2019s refining work in us happens in trials:<\/p>\n
\u201cMy brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.\u201d
\n(James 1:2\u20133, NKJV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\nJob\u2019s story is a powerful example of this. Though he lost everything, God restored him with double<\/strong>:<\/p>\n
\u201cNow the Lord blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning…\u201d
\n(Job 42:12, NKJV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\nJob didn\u2019t know it, but his suffering had a divine purpose. God was vindicating Job\u2019s faith<\/strong>, exposing the schemes of Satan (Job 1:6\u201312), and preparing Job for a deeper understanding of God’s greatness (Job 38\u201342).<\/p>\n
\nSEEING THE BIGGER PICTURE<\/strong><\/h2>\n
Sometimes what appears to be \u201cbad\u201d is simply the process leading to something better<\/strong>:<\/p>\n
\n
- When Israel was surrounded by the Aramean army<\/strong> (2 Kings 6\u20137), the siege led to a miraculous deliverance and abundance.<\/li>\n
- When Samson faced a lion<\/strong>, God used it to bring him honey (Judges 14:8\u20139).<\/li>\n
- A woman in labor pains<\/strong> endures momentary suffering, but rejoices in the birth of new life (John 16:21).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
In all these examples, adversity was the doorway to breakthrough.<\/p>\n
\nDEVELOPING GODLY CHARACTER<\/strong><\/h2>\n
Seasons of testing are where godly character is formed<\/strong>:<\/p>\n
\n
- Patience<\/strong> (Romans 5:3\u20134)<\/li>\n
- Humility<\/strong> (1 Peter 5:6)<\/li>\n
- Endurance<\/strong> (Hebrews 12:7\u201311)<\/li>\n
- Faith<\/strong> (1 Peter 1:6\u20137)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
God uses these seasons to conform us to the image of Christ<\/strong> (Romans 8:28\u201329). What we often call \u201cbad times\u201d may actually be God’s way of making us more like Jesus.<\/p>\n
\nGOD DOES NOT DESTROY HIS CHILDREN<\/strong><\/h2>\n
Let\u2019s be clear: God does not bring destruction to His children.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish?… how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!\u201d
\n(Luke 11:11,13, NKJV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\nGod disciplines, yes (Hebrews 12:6), but never to destroy<\/strong>. His goal is always restoration and growth. He is a good Father<\/strong>\u2014even when He allows hardship.<\/p>\n
\nTHE END OF JOB: A TESTIMONY OF GOD\u2019S MERCY<\/strong><\/h2>\n
James 5:11 (NKJV)<\/strong> sums it up perfectly:<\/p>\n
\u201cIndeed we count them blessed who endure. You have heard of the perseverance of Job and seen the end intended by the Lord\u2014that the Lord is very compassionate and merciful.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
God\u2019s goal was not to break Job, but to bless him\u2014and through his endurance<\/strong>, Job received a deeper revelation of God<\/strong> and greater blessings<\/strong> than he had before.<\/p>\n
\nFINAL ENCOURAGEMENT<\/strong><\/h2>\n
So when Job asked, \u201cShall we accept good from God, and not adversity?\u201d<\/em>\u2014he wasn\u2019t suggesting that God is the source of evil. He was affirming that God is sovereign over every season<\/strong>, including those of sorrow and pain.<\/p>\n
As believers, we can rest in the truth that:<\/p>\n
\n
- God allows trials with a purpose<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
- No pain is ever wasted<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
- And the end of the story<\/strong> will reveal God\u2019s goodness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
So trust Him\u2014not just in the blessing, but also in the battle.<\/p>\n
The Lord is good, and His mercy endures forever.<\/strong>
