{"id":55303,"date":"2020-01-16T22:17:48","date_gmt":"2020-01-16T19:17:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wingulamashahidi.org\/?p=55303"},"modified":"2025-09-16T12:26:17","modified_gmt":"2025-09-16T09:26:17","slug":"they-feared-the-lord-yet-served-their-own-gods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wingulamashahidi.org\/en\/2020\/01\/16\/they-feared-the-lord-yet-served-their-own-gods\/","title":{"rendered":"THEY FEARED THE LORD, YET SERVED THEIR OWN GODS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Shalom, dear brothers and sisters in Christ.<\/strong><br \/>\nLet us open our hearts as we study this vital lesson from Scripture.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Israel\u2019s Compromise<\/h2>\n<p>When the children of Israel forsook the LORD and turned to foreign gods, He judged them by sending them into exile. The northern kingdom of Israel was carried away to Assyria (2 Kings 17:23), and later Judah also fell because of disobedience (2 Chronicles 36:14\u201320). Their once holy land was left desolate.<\/p>\n<p>The Assyrian king then imported foreigners from Babylon, Cuthah, Ava, Hamath, and Sepharvaim to repopulate Samaria (2 Kings 17:24). These settlers did not know the God of Israel, so the LORD sent lions among them (v. 25). In response, one of the exiled priests was sent back to teach them \u201cthe manner of the God of the land\u201d (v. 27, KJV).<\/p>\n<p>Yet even after being instructed, Scripture records:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cSo they feared the LORD, but also served their own gods, after the manner of the nations from among whom they had been carried away.\u201d<br \/>\n<em>(2 Kings 17:33, ESV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is the heart of the problem: a divided devotion. Outwardly they acknowledged Yahweh, but inwardly they clung to their idols.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Why They Feared the LORD \u2014 and Why They Kept Their Idols<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>They feared the LORD<\/strong> only because they wanted protection from lions. Their obedience was external and motivated by fear of consequences, not love for God (cf. Isaiah 29:13; Matthew 15:8).<\/li>\n<li><strong>They kept their idols<\/strong> because they loved them. Like many today, they could not abandon their traditions and ancestral attachments (cf. Jeremiah 2:11\u201313).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Their compromise\u2014\u201chalf God, half idol\u201d\u2014was an attempt to secure the benefits of God\u2019s protection while still indulging their sinful desires. But Scripture makes it clear: God demands <strong>exclusive worship<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cYou shall have no other gods before Me.\u201d<br \/>\n<em>(Exodus 20:3, NKJV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cNo one can serve two masters\u2026 You cannot serve God and mammon.\u201d<br \/>\n<em>(Matthew 6:24, NKJV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>The Danger of Lukewarm Faith<\/h2>\n<p>This divided worship was not unique to ancient Israel. It reflects a condition seen even today: Christians who profess faith in Christ but still cling to ancestral rituals, witchcraft, or cultural practices contrary to the gospel.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus Himself warned the church in Laodicea:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm\u2026 I will vomit you out of My mouth.\u201d<br \/>\n<em>(Revelation 3:15\u201316, NKJV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Lukewarm faith is detestable to Christ because it is deceptive. It appears religious on the outside but lacks true commitment. Such halfhearted devotion is, in biblical language, <strong>spiritual adultery<\/strong> (James 4:4; Hosea 2:2\u20135).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>The Call to Separation<\/h2>\n<p>Paul reminds us that believers are the temple of the living God:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cDo not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?&#8230; For you are the temple of the living God.\u201d<br \/>\n<em>(2 Corinthians 6:14, 16, NKJV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Therefore, Christians must renounce all practices tied to idolatry, witchcraft, or occult traditions, no matter how deeply rooted in family culture they may be.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWhat agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God.\u201d<br \/>\n<em>(2 Corinthians 6:16, ESV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is not merely about physical idols but also about <strong>any rival affection<\/strong> that takes God\u2019s place\u2014money, power, ancestry, culture, or relationships.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>The Security of the Believer<\/h2>\n<p>Many fear curses or witchcraft if they reject ancestral practices. But Scripture assures us:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cSurely there is no enchantment against Jacob, neither is there any divination against Israel.\u201d<br \/>\n<em>(Numbers 23:23, KJV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In Christ, we are under His covenant protection:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cNo weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue which rises against you in judgment you shall condemn.\u201d<br \/>\n<em>(Isaiah 54:17, NKJV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cHe who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.\u201d<br \/>\n<em>(1 John 4:4, NKJV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Therefore, we need not fear witchcraft, curses, or ancestral spirits. Christ\u2019s blood has broken every chain (Colossians 2:14\u201315).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>The Urgent Decision<\/h2>\n<p>The message is clear: God rejects divided worship. We must choose whom we will serve, just as Joshua challenged Israel:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cChoose for yourselves this day whom you will serve\u2026 But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.\u201d<br \/>\n<em>(Joshua 24:15, NIV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To try to serve both God and idols is to bring ourselves under a curse rather than a blessing. The only path to life and freedom is wholehearted devotion to Christ.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>Beloved, the lesson of 2 Kings 17 is not just history\u2014it is a warning to us today. We cannot mix light with darkness, Christ with idols, or faith with superstition.<\/p>\n<p>Let us tear down every altar that competes with God in our lives.
