{"id":55840,"date":"2019-05-13T11:27:54","date_gmt":"2019-05-13T08:27:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wingulamashahidi.org\/?p=55840"},"modified":"2025-09-22T08:42:28","modified_gmt":"2025-09-22T05:42:28","slug":"books-of-the-bible-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wingulamashahidi.org\/en\/2019\/05\/13\/books-of-the-bible-part-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Books of the Bible: Part 2"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Welcome back to our journey through the Scriptures.<br \/>So far, we\u2019ve studied the first four books <strong>Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers<\/strong>. Today, by God\u2019s grace, we continue with the next four: <strong>Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, and Ruth.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>5) Deuteronomy<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Deuteronomy, written by Moses, was given at the threshold of the Promised Land. Its purpose was to <strong>reaffirm the covenant<\/strong> for the new generation of Israelites. The Hebrew title <em>\u201cDevarim\u201d<\/em> (meaning \u201cwords\u201d) reflects Moses\u2019 final speeches to Israel, while the Greek title <em>\u201cDeuteronomion\u201d<\/em> means \u201csecond law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most of those who had left Egypt died in the wilderness due to unbelief (Numbers 14:22\u201323). Only Joshua and Caleb remained. Thus, Deuteronomy addresses their children, reminding them of God\u2019s commands.<\/p>\n<p>One of its central texts is the <em>Shema<\/em>, a declaration of Israel\u2019s monotheistic faith and love for God:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>Deuteronomy 6:4\u20137 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\u201cHear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.<br \/>You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.<br \/>And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.<br \/>You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.\u201d<span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">Deuteronomy emphasizes:<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Covenant renewal<\/strong>: Israel is reminded of God\u2019s faithfulness and their responsibility to obey (Deut. 29:9\u201315).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Blessings and curses<\/strong>: Obedience brings blessing, while disobedience brings curse (Deut. 28). This anticipates Israel\u2019s later history.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>The Great Commandment<\/strong>: Jesus Himself cites Deut. 6:5 as the greatest commandment (Matthew 22:37\u201338).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Thus, Deuteronomy is not simply historical it\u2019s covenantal, pressing God\u2019s people to remember His Word and live by it.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>6) Joshua<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The book of Joshua, written by Joshua son of Nun, recounts the conquest and settlement of Canaan. Following Moses\u2019 death, God commissioned Joshua to lead the people:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>Joshua 1:5 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\u201cNo one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Joshua highlights <strong>God\u2019s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises<\/strong>. Centuries earlier, God promised Abraham that his descendants would inherit the land (Genesis 15:18\u201321). Joshua records the fulfillment:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>Joshua 21:43\u201345 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\u201cSo the Lord gave Israel all the land he had sworn to give their ancestors\u2026 Not one of all the Lord\u2019s good promises to Israel failed; every one was fulfilled.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Key themes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Victory through obedience<\/strong>: At Jericho (Joshua 6), Israel\u2019s success came not from military strength but from trusting God\u2019s instructions. Conversely, at Ai (Joshua 7), disobedience led to defeat.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>God as Warrior King<\/strong>: The Lord Himself fights for Israel (Joshua 10:11\u201314).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Covenant faithfulness<\/strong>: The land distribution reflects God\u2019s commitment to His covenant with Abraham.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For Christians, Joshua prefigures Christ (<em>Yeshua<\/em> = \u201cthe Lord saves\u201d). Just as Joshua led Israel into their inheritance, so Jesus leads believers into their eternal rest (Hebrews 4:8\u201310).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>7) Judges<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Judges, written by the prophet Samuel, covers Israel\u2019s history between Joshua and the monarchy. It describes a recurring cycle: <strong>sin \u2192 oppression \u2192 repentance \u2192 deliverance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The key verse summarizes the theological chaos:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>Judges 21:25 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\u201cIn those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Judges teaches:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Human depravity<\/strong>: Israel repeatedly falls into idolatry despite God\u2019s faithfulness (Judges 2:11\u201313).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>God\u2019s mercy<\/strong>: Despite their rebellion, God raises judges deliverers empowered by His Spirit (Judges 2:16\u201318).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Christological foreshadowing<\/strong>: The imperfect judges (Gideon, Samson, Deborah, Jephthah) point forward to the perfect Judge and Deliverer, Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For example, Gideon\u2019s weakness highlights God\u2019s power (Judges 7:2). Samson, though flawed, points to a savior whose death delivers God\u2019s people (Judges 16:30; cf. Hebrews 11:32).<\/p>\n<p>Thus, Judges is not just history it is theology in narrative, showing Israel\u2019s need for a righteous King, ultimately fulfilled in Christ (1 Timothy 6:15).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>8) Ruth<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The book of Ruth, also written by Samuel, is set \u201cin the days when the judges ruled\u201d (Ruth 1:1). It provides a contrast to the chaos of Judges, highlighting God\u2019s providence and covenant love (<em>hesed<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>Ruth, a Moabite widow, demonstrates loyalty to Naomi and faith in Israel\u2019s God:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>Ruth 1:16\u201317 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\u201cWhere you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Ruth illustrates:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><strong>God\u2019s providence<\/strong>: Ordinary events (famine, gleaning, marriage) are woven into His redemptive plan.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Kinsman redeemer (go\u2019el)<\/strong>: Boaz foreshadows Christ, our Redeemer, who buys us back from spiritual poverty (Ruth 4:9\u201310; cf. Galatians 3:13).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Inclusion of the Gentiles<\/strong>: Ruth, a foreigner, is grafted into Israel and becomes the great-grandmother of David, through whom the Messiah comes (Matthew 1:5\u20136).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ruth assures us that God is sovereign even in the mundane and that His redemptive plan includes all nations through Christ.<\/p>\n<p>These four books <strong>Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, and Ruth <\/strong>teach us that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>God is faithful to His covenant.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Obedience brings blessing; disobedience brings judgment.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>God raises imperfect leaders to point us to the perfect Redeemer, Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>God\u2019s plan of salvation is both particular (for Israel) and universal (embracing the nations).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As Paul reminds us:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>Romans 15:4 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\u201cFor everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class='share-to-whatsapp-wrapper'><div class='share-on-whsp'>Share on: <\/div><a data-text='Books of the Bible: Part 2' data-link='https:\/\/wingulamashahidi.org\/en\/2019\/05\/13\/books-of-the-bible-part-2\/' class='whatsapp-button whatsapp-share'>WhatsApp<\/a><div class='clear '><\/div><\/div><p class=\"wpf_wrapper\"><a class=\"print_link\" href=\"\">Print this post<\/a><\/p><!-- .wpf_wrapper -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome back to our journey through the Scriptures.So far, we\u2019ve studied the first four books Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers.
