In this session, we\u2019ll continue exploring four historical books: <strong>1 Kings, 2 Kings, 1 Chronicles, and 2 Chronicles.<\/strong> Previously, we covered the first ten books, so if you haven&#8217;t gone through them yet, it would be helpful to read those summaries first to keep the flow consistent.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>1 &amp; 2 Kings\u00a0 Written by the Prophet Jeremiah<\/h3>\n<p>Originally, <strong>1 and 2 Kings<\/strong> were a single book, later divided into two. They are traditionally attributed to <strong>the prophet Jeremiah<\/strong>, who, though he lived at the end of the monarchy, had access to historical records known as the <strong>Annals of the Kings of Israel and Judah<\/strong> (see 1 Kings 14:19; 2 Kings 15:6). These books give a sweeping account of the monarchies of Israel and Judah.<\/p>\n<p>The narrative begins with <strong>King Solomon<\/strong>, the third king of Israel after Saul and David, and progresses through a long line of kings some faithful, most unfaithful.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>\u00a0Summary and Purpose of 1 &amp; 2 Kings<\/h3>\n<p>These books describe:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The rise and fall of kings.<\/li>\n<li>The division of the united kingdom into two: <strong>Israel (North)<\/strong> and <strong>Judah (South)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The ministries of prophets like <strong>Elijah<\/strong> and <strong>Elisha<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The eventual downfall of both kingdoms due to widespread idolatry and rebellion against God.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Although the Israelites had demanded a king (1 Samuel 8), this was not God\u2019s original desire for them. Still, God allowed it and worked through their kingship even using their failures to reveal His justice and mercy.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>The Reign of Solomon<\/h3>\n<p>Solomon was <strong>David\u2019s son<\/strong> through <strong>Bathsheba<\/strong> (the wife of Uriah). Although his reign started with wisdom and glory, it ended in spiritual decline.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cNow King Solomon loved many foreign women\u2026from the nations concerning which the Lord had said\u2026\u2018You shall not enter into marriage with them\u2026\u2019\u201d<br \/>\n<em>1 Kings 11:1\u20132 (ESV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Solomon married many foreign women (700 wives and 300 concubines) who led him to worship other gods such as <strong>Ashtoreth<\/strong>, <strong>Milcom<\/strong>, <strong>Chemosh<\/strong>, and <strong>Molech<\/strong> (1 Kings 11:5\u20137). Though he later repented (as suggested in Ecclesiastes), the damage was already done.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Solomon\u2019s Temple\u00a0 A Glorious Achievement<\/h3>\n<p>Solomon built a magnificent <strong>Temple in Jerusalem<\/strong>, fulfilling the desire of his father David (1 Kings 6\u20138). God had told David:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cYou shall not build a house for my name\u2026for you are a man of war and have shed blood.\u201d<em>1 Chronicles 28:3 (ESV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So Solomon built it instead. The Temple symbolized God\u2019s dwelling among His people, and the construction showcased unmatched excellence, with resources and craftsmanship from across the known world. The Temple was completed in silence (1 Kings 6:7), making it a wonder to behold.<\/p>\n<p>God blessed Israel with peace during Solomon\u2019s reign, but his later idolatry led to severe consequences:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cTherefore the Lord said to Solomon, \u2018Since this has been your practice\u2026 I will surely tear the kingdom from you\u2026 Nevertheless, I will not do it in your days for the sake of David your father\u2026\u2019\u201d<em>1 Kings 11:11\u201312 (ESV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>\u00a0The Kingdom Divided: Israel and Judah<\/h3>\n<p>After Solomon\u2019s death, his son <strong>Rehoboam<\/strong> became king. Due to his harsh leadership, ten tribes revolted under <strong>Jeroboam<\/strong>, forming the <strong>Northern Kingdom (Israel)<\/strong>, while only <strong>Judah and Benjamin<\/strong> remained under Rehoboam in the <strong>Southern Kingdom (Judah)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, the once united Israel was split in two:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Israel (North)<\/strong>\u00a0 10 tribes, ruled from Samaria.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Judah (South)<\/strong>\u00a0 2 tribes, ruled from Jerusalem.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The Fall of the Northern Kingdom<\/h3>\n<p>Every king of Israel (north) did evil in God\u2019s sight. Jeroboam introduced golden calves (1 Kings 12:28\u201330), and later kings, such as <strong>Ahab and Jezebel<\/strong>, led Israel even deeper into idolatry and injustice. Jezebel, a pagan queen from Sidon, promoted Baal worship and persecuted God\u2019s prophets.<\/p>\n<p>In response, God raised up prophets especially <strong>Elijah <\/strong>to call the people back to Him (1 Kings 17\u201319).<\/p>\n<p>Despite miracles and warnings, Israel did not repent. After centuries of rebellion, <strong>Assyria conquered Israel<\/strong> in 722 BC and took the people into exile (2 Kings 17).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>The Southern Kingdom (Judah)\u00a0 A Mixed Record<\/h3>\n<p>Judah had a few righteous kings like <strong>Hezekiah<\/strong> and <strong>Josiah<\/strong>, who led reformations and sought to bring the people back to God. But most kings followed corrupt practices, leading Judah down a similar path as Israel.<\/p>\n<p>The prophet <strong>Jeremiah<\/strong>, along with others like Isaiah and Micah, continually warned of coming judgment if the people didn\u2019t repent.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, Judah too was judged. In <strong>586 BC<\/strong>, <strong>Babylon invaded, destroyed Jerusalem<\/strong>, and took the people into exile for <strong>70 years<\/strong>, fulfilling God\u2019s word.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThey mocked the messengers of God, despised his words\u2026until the wrath of the Lord rose against his people, until there was no remedy.\u201d<em>2 Chronicles 36:16 (ESV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>The Danger of Rebellion<\/h3>\n<p>Solomon\u2019s sin didn&#8217;t affect just him it tore a nation apart. This is a profound lesson: <strong>Sin always has consequences that extend beyond the sinner.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You might think, <em>&#8220;My actions only affect me,&#8221;<\/em> but Scripture warns otherwise.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cA little leaven leavens the whole lump.\u201d<br \/>\n<em>Galatians 5:9 (ESV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When believers sin willfully, they damage the testimony of the Church and dishonor God\u2019s name. We see this in how Israel&#8217;s disobedience led not only to exile, but also to <strong>God\u2019s holy name being blasphemed among the nations<\/strong> (Romans 2:24).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>A Call to Repentance<\/h3>\n<p>God sent prophets <strong>early and often<\/strong>, warning His people out of <strong>compassion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe Lord, the God of their fathers, sent persistently to them by his messengers\u2026because he had compassion on his people and on his dwelling place.\u201d<em>2 Chronicles 36:15 (ESV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But they mocked the messengers, hardened their hearts, and refused to repent.<\/p>\n<p>This is no different today. People scoff at the Gospel, mock preachers, and ignore God\u2019s Word. But the Bible warns:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cStrive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.\u201d<em>Luke 13:24 (ESV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There will be a time when <strong>grace will no longer be offered<\/strong>. The door will be shut.<\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0What Must You Do?<\/h3>\n<p>Today, if you hear His voice, <strong>do not harden your heart<\/strong> (Hebrews 3:15). Repent from sin. Believe in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Be baptized.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cRepent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.\u201d<br \/>\n<em>Acts 2:38 (ESV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>True baptism is by <strong>full immersion<\/strong> in <strong>the name of Jesus Christ<\/strong>, not merely a symbol but a step of obedience tied to repentance and forgiveness.<\/p>\n<p>Read these books yourself 1 Kings, 2 Kings, 1 Chronicles, and 2 Chronicles. Don\u2019t skip any part. They are rich with lessons about God\u2019s faithfulness, judgment, and mercy.<\/p>\n<p>They show how God patiently pleads with His people for centuries before judgment falls. They also show how sin, if unrepented, always brings destruction but repentance brings mercy.<\/p>\n<p>Let these stories stir your heart. Turn to Christ today.
