Welcome again to our Bible study journey.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is part eight in our ongoing exploration of the books of the Bible. So far, we\u2019ve covered the first 17 books, including significant ones like <em>Ezra<\/em> and <em>Jeremiah<\/em>. Today, by the grace of God, we continue with the next book in line\u00a0 the prophetic book of <strong>Ezekiel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Before we begin, if you haven\u2019t yet gone through the earlier books we studied, I encourage you to do so at your own pace and in a prayerful, reflective manner. This teaching is intended to <strong>build upon your personal study<\/strong>, not replace it.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Overview of the Book of Ezekiel<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Book number:<\/strong> 26th in the Bible<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Chapters:<\/strong> 48<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Author:<\/strong> The prophet Ezekiel<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Name Meaning:<\/strong> <em>Ezekiel<\/em> means \u201cGod strengthens\u201d or \u201cGod will strengthen.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Estimated date of writing:<\/strong> Between <strong>593\u2013570 BC<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Written during the Babylonian exile, particularly after the second wave of deportation of Jews to Babylon.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>The Three Exiles to Babylon<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The deportation of the Jews to Babylon occurred in <strong>three major waves<\/strong>, each connected to a different king:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p><strong>First Exile\u00a0 Under King Jehoiakim (around 605 BC):<\/strong><br \/>Notable captives included <strong>Daniel<\/strong>, <strong>Shadrach<\/strong>, <strong>Meshach<\/strong>, and <strong>Abednego<\/strong> (Daniel 1:1\u20136).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Second Exile\u00a0 Under King Jehoiachin (a.k.a. Jeconiah or Yekoniah):<\/strong><br \/>This is when <strong>Ezekiel<\/strong> was taken into captivity (2 Kings 24:10\u201317).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Third and Final Exile\u00a0 Under King Zedekiah:<\/strong><br \/>Zedekiah rebelled against Nebuchadnezzar, resulting in <strong>the complete destruction of Jerusalem<\/strong>, including the burning of the Temple. He was captured, had his eyes gouged out, and was taken to Babylon (2 Kings 25:1\u20137).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>At this point, <strong>Jeremiah<\/strong>, still in Jerusalem, mourned deeply for the people and warned them of the coming judgment, but they refused to listen (Jeremiah 25; Lamentations 1).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Ezekiel\u2019s Calling and Initial Vision<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Ezekiel began receiving visions <strong>while still on the journey into exile<\/strong>, around the <strong>River Kebar<\/strong>. His first vision is powerful and mysterious:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIn the thirtieth year, in the fourth month on the fifth day, while I was among the exiles by the Kebar River, the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God.\u201d<br \/><em>Ezekiel 1:1, NIV<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Like <strong>Isaiah<\/strong> (Isaiah 6) and <strong>John<\/strong> in Revelation (Revelation 4), Ezekiel saw <strong>the heavens opened<\/strong>, <strong>God\u2019s throne<\/strong>, and <strong>cherubim (angelic beings)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the vision, God gave him a <strong>scroll<\/strong>, not to read, but to <strong>eat<\/strong>\u00a0 a symbolic act that represents internalizing God&#8217;s message:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThen I looked, and I saw a hand stretched out to me. In it was a scroll\u2026 and on both sides of it were written words of lament and mourning and woe.\u201d<em>Ezekiel 2:9\u201310, NIV<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This scroll symbolizes <strong>God\u2019s prophetic message<\/strong>\u00a0 filled with <strong>warnings, judgment, and sorrow<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>God\u2019s Commission to Ezekiel<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Ezekiel was called to speak not to foreign nations, but <strong>to the house of Israel<\/strong>\u00a0 specifically, <strong>those still remaining in Jerusalem<\/strong> and the broader Jewish exilic community.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cHe said to me, \u2018Son of man, eat what is before you, eat this scroll; then go and speak to the people of Israel.\u2019\u201d<em>Ezekiel 3:1, NIV<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cYou are not being sent to a people of obscure speech and strange language\u2026 If I had sent you to them, they would have listened to you.\u201d<em>Ezekiel 3:5\u20136, NIV<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Here we see a painful truth: <strong>those closest to God\u2019s covenant often reject His messengers<\/strong>, even more than outsiders might.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Structure of the Book of Ezekiel<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The book of Ezekiel can be broken into <strong>four major sections<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1. Chapters 1\u201324: Judgment on Jerusalem and Judah<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>These chapters contain <strong>prophecies against the sinful practices<\/strong> of Judah and Jerusalem\u00a0 including idolatry, injustice, and hypocrisy. Ezekiel warns them of the coming <strong>destruction of the Temple<\/strong> and the city.<\/p>\n<p>Ezekiel\u2019s message parallels that of Jeremiah, who remained in Jerusalem. While <strong>Jeremiah preached within the city<\/strong>, <strong>Ezekiel prophesied from among the exiles<\/strong> in Babylon. They both delivered the <strong>same warning<\/strong>\u00a0 impending judgment.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>2. Chapters 25\u201332: Judgment on the Surrounding Nations<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>After Jerusalem&#8217;s fall, Ezekiel shifts to prophesy against <strong>neighboring nations<\/strong> like <strong>Ammon, Moab, Edom, Philistia, Tyre, Sidon, and Egypt<\/strong>. These nations had mocked or harmed Israel and would now also experience judgment from God.<\/p>\n<p>This fulfills God&#8217;s word that <strong>He is sovereign over all nations<\/strong>, not just Israel.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>3. Chapter 33: A Renewed Call to Repentance<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Following judgment, God gives a renewed appeal for repentance. He affirms personal responsibility and the need for each individual to <strong>turn from sin<\/strong> and live.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAs surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live.\u201d<em>Ezekiel 33:11, NIV<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>4. Chapters 34\u201348: Future Restoration and Hope<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>These final chapters are filled with <strong>hope and prophecy<\/strong>. God promises to <strong>restore His people<\/strong>, shepherd them Himself (Ezekiel 34), and eventually <strong>rebuild the Temple<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most profound prophecies includes a <strong>future third temple<\/strong>, described in great architectural detail (Ezekiel 40\u201348). Many scholars and theologians believe this refers to an <strong>end times<\/strong> structure not yet built.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAnd the name of the city from that time on shall be, The LORD Is There.\u201d<em>Ezekiel 48:35, ESV<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Themes in Ezekiel<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3>1. <strong>God\u2019s Holiness and Justice<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>God demands purity in worship and conduct. He will not tolerate idolatry or compromise (Ezekiel 8, 14).<\/p>\n<h3>2. <strong>Personal Responsibility for Sin<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Each soul is accountable before God. Salvation is not based on the righteousness of others.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe soul who sins shall die.\u201d<em>Ezekiel 18:4, 20, ESV<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3>3. <strong>The Role of the Watchman<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>God calls His messengers to <strong>warn others<\/strong>. Failure to do so brings guilt.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIf you do not speak to warn the wicked from his way\u2026 his blood I will require at your hand.\u201d<em>Ezekiel 33:8, ESV<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3>4. <strong>False Prophets<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>God rebukes those who claim to speak for Him but speak from their own imagination:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWoe to the foolish prophets who follow their own spirit and have seen nothing!\u201d<br \/><em>Ezekiel 13:3, ESV<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3>5. <strong>Future Warfare Gog and Magog<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In chapters 38\u201339, Ezekiel prophesies about a massive war involving nations around Israel\u00a0 many interpret this as an <strong>end times battle<\/strong>, possibly involving <strong>modern day Russia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Relevance to Today\u2019s Church<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We now live in what Revelation 3 calls the <strong>Laodicean church age<\/strong>\u00a0 a lukewarm spiritual era.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot\u2026 So, because you are lukewarm\u2026 I am about to spit you out of my mouth.\u201d<em>Revelation 3:15\u201316, NIV<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This is not about a specific denomination. It&#8217;s a warning to the <strong>global body of Christ<\/strong> to <strong>wake up spiritually<\/strong>, return to holiness, and prepare for Christ\u2019s return.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Call to Repentance and Salvation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If you have not yet surrendered fully to Christ if you are still caught in sin (sexual immorality, pornography, lying, slander, profanity)\u00a0 <strong>repent today<\/strong>. Jesus offers complete forgiveness and a new beginning.
