Shalom, child of God!<\/strong>
\nWelcome as we study the Good News of our Lord Jesus Christ the message that brings hope for both our present and eternal lives. Today, we reflect on a man named Jabez<\/strong>, a man whose story is brief but deeply impactful. We will look at his sincere prayer to God<\/strong> and how God answered him. His story is found in 1 Chronicles 4:9\u201310<\/strong>. Let us read it together:<\/p>\n

\u201cJabez was more honorable than his brothers; and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, \u2018Because I bore him in pain.\u2019<\/p>\n

Jabez called upon the God of Israel, saying, \u2018Oh that you would bless me and enlarge my border, and that your hand might be with me, and that you would keep me from harm so that it might not bring me pain!\u2019 And God granted what he asked.\u201d

The Background of Jabez<\/strong><\/h2>\n

From this short passage, we learn that Jabez did not have an easy start in life<\/strong>. His very name\u201cJabez\u201d <\/strong>means \u201csorrow\u201d or \u201cpain\u201d<\/strong>, because his mother gave birth to him during a time of deep distress. The Bible does not specify what kind of sorrow she experienced. It could have been due to health issues, financial hardship, personal loss, or emotional suffering<\/strong>. Whatever the cause, it was significant enough for her to name her son after her pain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In ancient Hebrew culture, names carried deep meaning <\/strong>they were often prophetic or descriptive of a person\u2019s destiny. To be called “Jabez” was to be labeled with pain, grief, and misfortune. People around him likely saw him as someone marked for a troubled life. While others were named Joy, Peace, Grace, or Blessing<\/strong>, he bore a name associated with sorrow, trouble, and misfortune<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n

A Life That Defied His Name<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Despite this heavy burden, Jabez did not accept this fate as final<\/strong>. The Bible tells us he was more honorable than his brothers <\/strong>meaning he lived with integrity, dignity, and fear of the Lord, even when others may have seen him as cursed. Rather than blaming others or giving up, he turned to the only One who could change his destiny: the God of Israel.<\/strong><\/p>\n

His prayer is short but powerful. Let us look again at what he said:<\/p>\n

\u201cOh that you would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, and that your hand might be with me, and that you would keep me from evil, so that it might not bring me pain.\u201d1 Chronicles 4:10 (paraphrased)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\n

Breaking Down His Prayer<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Jabez made four bold requests to God:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. “Bless me indeed”<\/strong>\u00a0 He didn\u2019t just want material blessing, but a life touched by God\u2019s favor<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  2. “Enlarge my territory”<\/strong>\u00a0 Not just land, but influence, opportunities, and capacity to do good<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  3. “Let your hand be with me”<\/strong>\u00a0 He asked for God\u2019s constant presence and guidance<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  4. “Keep me from evil so that I may not cause pain”<\/strong>\u00a0 He understood that the true source of sorrow in life is evil sin and disobedience<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    This last point is crucial. Jabez didn\u2019t blame his name or past<\/strong>. He identified the real threat to his future: evil<\/strong>, which causes pain both to us and those around us. He asked God to keep him from sin<\/strong>, and the Bible says:<\/p>\n

    \u201cAnd God granted what he asked.\u201d
    \n1 Chronicles 4:10 (ESV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    \n

    Jabez Knew What Many Today Miss<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    Jabez realized something that many overlook:
    \nIt is not curses, names, or past mistakes<\/strong> that destroy us it is evil<\/strong> (sin) that ruins destinies.<\/p>\n

    Jesus taught a similar truth:<\/p>\n

    \u201cBut what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person.
    \nFor out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander.\u201dMatthew 15:18\u201319 (ESV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    Jabez sought to be pure before God <\/strong>to be protected not just from harm, but from doing harm<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    \n

    This Message Is for You Today<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    Maybe, like Jabez, your beginning was painful<\/strong>.
    \nMaybe you were born into spiritual bondage<\/strong>, or you carry labels placed on you by others \u201cthief,\u201d \u201caddict,\u201d \u201cprostitute,\u201d \u201cfailure,\u201d \u201cuseless,\u201d \u201ccursed.\u201d Perhaps you’ve been called names<\/strong> or even cursed by your own parents<\/strong>. Maybe you\u2019ve inherited spiritual problems through demonic dedications or ungodly family traditions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    But hear this clearly:
    \nYour past does not define your future God does.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Jabez changed his story by seeking God with all his heart<\/strong>, and you can too.<\/p>\n

    \n

    How Can Your Life Change Like Jabez’s?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    1.Repent sincerely<\/strong>\u00a0 Acknowledge your sins and turn from them fully.<\/p>\n

    \u201cRepent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out.\u201d Acts 3:19 (ESV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    2.Accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior<\/strong>\u00a0 Surrender your life to Him.<\/p>\n

    \u201cIf anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.\u201d\u00a0 2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    3.Be baptized biblically<\/strong>\u00a0 By full immersion in water in the name of Jesus Christ<\/strong>, for the forgiveness of sins.<\/p>\n

    \u201cRepent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins\u2026\u201d\u00a0 Acts 2:38 (ESV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    4.Ask for the Holy Spirit<\/strong> You need God\u2019s power to overcome sin and walk in victory.<\/p>\n

    \n

    \u201c…you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you…\u201d\u00a0 Acts 1:8 (ESV)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    5.Pray like Jabez<\/strong>\u00a0 Ask God to bless you, guide you, and protect you from evil.<\/p>\n

    You Can Overcome Every Sin<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    With the help of the Holy Spirit, you will overcome<\/strong>:<\/p>\n
