Jezebel was a woman from the region of Lebanon, specifically from Sidon (1 Kings 16:31, NIV). She was a royal princess from a wealthy family. Although she was not an Israelite, she married King Ahab of Israel. This marriage was against God\u2019s command because God had instructed through Moses that the Israelites should not marry foreign women (Deuteronomy 7:3\u20134, ESV), as they would lead God\u2019s people into idolatry and away from Him.<\/p>\n
King Ahab disregarded this command and brought Jezebel into Israel along with her gods and false religious practices (1 Kings 16:31\u201333). This marked the beginning of significant spiritual decay in Israel, leading to idolatry and oppression. The Lord raised the prophet Elijah to confront this apostasy and call the people back to covenant faithfulness (1 Kings 17).<\/p>\n
Jezebel\u2019s most notorious trait was her involvement in sexual immorality. The Bible explicitly calls her a harlot and uniquely describes her using eye makeup and adorning her head to seduce men openly (2 Kings 9:30, NIV):<\/p>\n
\n\u201cWhen Jehu arrived at Jezreel, Jezebel heard about it. She put on eye makeup, arranged her hair, looked out the window, and waited.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
This behavior symbolizes a spirit of lust and seduction<\/strong>\u2014used to manipulate and lead others into sin. Jezebel’s lack of mourning over her son\u2019s death (2 Kings 9:30) reveals how deeply rooted this spirit was in her heart.<\/p>\n
Paul warns in 1 Corinthians 6:18 (NIV):<\/p>\n
\n\u201cFlee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
The spirit of Jezebel\u2019s sexual immorality is alive today, often disguised as \u201cfreedom\u201d or \u201cbeauty,\u201d but it leads to spiritual destruction. Women and men dressing immodestly\u2014whether in the church or society\u2014are often under this spirit\u2019s influence (1 Timothy 2:9-10). The Apostle Peter urges believers to live holy lives, \u201cnot with a willful desire for evil but as obedient children\u201d (1 Peter 1:14, NIV).<\/p>\n
\n2. The Spirit of Witchcraft (Sorcery and Rebellion)<\/h4>\n
Jezebel was also deeply involved in witchcraft and idolatry<\/strong>, as she promoted the worship of Baal, whose priests were often sorcerers (2 Kings 9:22, NIV):<\/p>\n
\n\u201cWhen Joram saw Jehu, he asked, \u2018Is it peace, Jehu?\u2019 Jehu replied, \u2018What peace can there be as long as the harlot Jezebel and her witchcraft are so many?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
The Old Testament consistently condemns witchcraft (Deuteronomy 18:10-12), associating it with rebellion against God. The New Testament confirms this opposition, stating that witches and sorcerers will not inherit the kingdom of God (Galatians 5:19-21; Revelation 21:8).<\/p>\n
The spirit of Jezebel uses occult practices and rebellion<\/strong> to deceive and lead God\u2019s people astray, opposing God\u2019s authority (James 4:7).<\/p>\n
\n3. The Spirit of False Prophecy<\/h4>\n
The book of Revelation identifies Jezebel\u2019s spirit as one of false prophecy that leads God\u2019s servants into sexual immorality and idolatry (Revelation 2:20, ESV):<\/p>\n
\n\u201cBut I have this against you, that you tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess and is teaching and deceiving my servants to practice sexual immorality and to eat food sacrificed to idols.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
False prophecy often masks sin with twisted theology, such as the lie that \u201cGod only looks at the heart, not the outward appearance\u201d to justify immoral behavior. However, God\u2019s Word teaches that both heart and actions matter (1 Samuel 16:7; Matthew 23:27-28).<\/p>\n
Jesus warned in Matthew 5:28 (NIV):<\/p>\n
\n\u201cBut I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
This spirit encourages believers to embrace sin knowingly or unknowingly<\/strong>, using false teaching to justify disobedience. The Apostle Paul exhorts believers to \u201cput on the Lord Jesus Christ\u201d and not gratify the desires of the flesh (Romans 13:14, ESV).<\/p>\n
\nThe Jezebel Spirit\u2019s Characteristics and Warning<\/h3>\n

Pride and Rebellion:<\/strong> Jezebel never humbled herself before the prophet Elijah, even swearing vengeance after he called down fire on Baal\u2019s prophets (1 Kings 19). This spirit fosters pride, cruelty, and hatred toward true servants of God (Proverbs 6:16-19).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

Opposition to God\u2019s Prophets:<\/strong> Jezebel\u2019s spirit fights against God\u2019s truth and those who faithfully preach it.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

Destruction of the Church:<\/strong> This spirit still works to destroy churches by promoting immorality, witchcraft, and false teaching.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
