Welcome to today\u2019s Bible study. We will look at two women in Scripture who played significant roles during the time of Jesus: the <strong>wife of Herod<\/strong> and the <strong>wife of Pontius Pilate<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Though both were married to powerful Roman rulers in Israel during the time of Christ, their actions and attitudes in critical moments revealed very different spiritual conditions. This lesson is especially relevant for Christian women today, but men can also learn valuable insights.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>Roman Rule in Israel<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>During the time of Jesus, <strong>the Roman Empire<\/strong> ruled over most of the known world, including <strong>Palestine (Israel)<\/strong>. This region was divided into provinces governed by Roman-appointed leaders.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Herod the Great<\/strong>, mentioned in <strong>Luke 1:5<\/strong>, was appointed by <strong>Caesar Augustus<\/strong> (Luke 2:1) as King of Judea and surrounding regions. He is remembered for rebuilding the Temple in Jerusalem (John 2:20), but also for his cruelty, such as the massacre of infants in Bethlehem (Matthew 2:16).<\/li>\n<li>After Herod the Great died, his kingdom was divided among his sons:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Herod Antipas<\/strong> governed <strong>Galilee and Perea<\/strong> (Luke 3:1)\u00a0 he was the one who later had <strong>John the Baptist beheaded<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Archelaus<\/strong> ruled <strong>Judea, Samaria, and Idumea<\/strong>, but due to his brutality, <strong>Caesar Augustus removed him from power<\/strong> and replaced him with a Roman governor: <strong>Pontius Pilate<\/strong>, who governed during the time of Jesus\u2019 ministry and crucifixion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>Two Women, Two Spirits<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Now, let us compare the <strong>wives<\/strong> of these two rulers:<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1. Herod\u2019s Wife (Herodias)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Herodias<\/strong> was married to Herod Antipas.<\/li>\n<li>She held a deep grudge against <strong>John the Baptist<\/strong> because he rebuked her immoral marriage to Herod (Mark 6:17-18).<\/li>\n<li>Driven by bitterness and pride, she conspired to have John executed. She used her daughter to manipulate Herod during a party, asking for John&#8217;s head on a platter (Mark 6:24-28).<\/li>\n<li>Her actions reveal a <strong>rebellious and murderous spirit<\/strong>, even though she knew John was \u201ca righteous and holy man\u201d (Mark 6:20).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>2. Pilate\u2019s Wife<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>During Jesus&#8217; trial, Pilate&#8217;s wife had a troubling dream about Jesus and warned her husband:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered much because of him today in a dream.&#8221; (Matthew 27:19)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>Her words reflect <strong>spiritual sensitivity<\/strong>. Unlike Herodias, she <strong>feared God<\/strong> and was <strong>troubled<\/strong> by injustice.<\/li>\n<li>While she was still a pagan by birth, she responded to <strong>God\u2019s revelation in a dream<\/strong>, similar to how <strong>Gentile figures like the Magi or Cornelius<\/strong> were led to truth (cf. Matthew 2:12, Acts 10).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>What Made the Difference?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Both women were Roman, both married to powerful men, both living in the same historical context\u00a0 yet their hearts responded differently.<\/p>\n<p>One helped silence the voice of a prophet.<br \/>\nThe other tried to stop the unjust execution of the Son of God.<\/p>\n<p>What was the difference?<\/p>\n<p>The answer lies in the <strong>spiritual condition of the heart<\/strong>. One had a heart open to the conviction of God\u2019s Spirit; the other was hardened by sin and pride. This shows us that it&#8217;s not your position or culture that determines your relationship with God\u00a0 it\u2019s your <strong>heart<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cToday, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts\u2026\u201d (Hebrews 3:15)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>Application to Today\u2019s Christian Woman (and Man)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Just as in the time of Jesus, today we see different responses among believers\u00a0 especially regarding <strong>conviction and holiness<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>You may hear one Christian woman say:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel convicted when I wear tight clothing or short skirts. I feel uncomfortable when I wear makeup to attract attention. I sense in my spirit that it dishonors God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While another says:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not about the outside. God looks at the heart. I don\u2019t feel anything wrong with how I dress. It\u2019s my freedom in Christ.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But let me ask you: <strong>Why does one feel convicted, and the other does not?<\/strong><br \/>\nIs it because one has a different &#8220;spirit&#8221;?<br \/>\nAre these just personal opinions\u00a0 or is it the <strong>Holy Spirit<\/strong> warning one and <strong>being ignored<\/strong> by the other?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cLikewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self control\u2026\u201d(1 Timothy 2:9-10, ESV)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>True Christianity transforms not only the heart but also our outward conduct. If your conscience is no longer grieved by sin, if you&#8217;re no longer sensitive to how you present yourself before God and others\u00a0 then you should ask yourself:<br \/>\n<strong>Is the Holy Spirit still active in me?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The difference between <strong>Herod\u2019s wife<\/strong> and <strong>Pilate\u2019s wife<\/strong> is not their background, but their <strong>response to the truth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>Don\u2019t Crucify Christ with Your Actions<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Every time we ignore conviction, mock holiness, or choose compromise, we are\u00a0 in a spiritual sense\u00a0 <strong>crucifying Christ again<\/strong> (Hebrews 6:6).<\/p>\n<p>You might say, \u201cMy situation is hard. I can&#8217;t stop dressing this way or living like this.\u201d<br \/>\nBut both Herodias and Pilate&#8217;s wife were in similar circumstances\u00a0 yet only one had <strong>the fear of God<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Sisters in Christ\u00a0 and brothers too\u00a0 the devil has always targeted women, from <strong>Eve in the Garden (Genesis 3)<\/strong> to today, because of the powerful influence they hold in families, churches, and societies. Do not let Satan use you as a tool of destruction.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cDo not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind\u2026\u201d (Romans 12:2)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Seek to follow the example of godly women like <strong>Sarah, Rebekah, Hannah<\/strong>, and not worldly celebrities or fashion trends inspired by darkness.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>For the Brothers: Examine Yourself Too<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Men are not exempt.<br \/>\nMany have compromised copying worldly trends, shaving and dressing to impress, getting tattoos, and living carelessly\u00a0 while still claiming to follow Christ.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cExamine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves.\u201d (2Corinthians 13:5)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Is the <strong>Spirit in you<\/strong> the same Holy Spirit that convicts others of sin? Or are you living by a different standard?<\/p>\n<p>Let us be honest before God.<br \/>\nLet the Holy Spirit stir us again.<br \/>\nLet\u2019s stop justifying worldliness with \u201cgrace\u201d while ignoring <strong>the voice of conviction<\/strong>.<br \/>\nLet us honor the Lord in <strong>our conduct, our appearance, and our daily choices<\/strong>\u00a0 until the day Christ returns.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c&#8230;without holiness, no one will see the Lord.\u201d (Hebrews 12:14)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It is my prayer that this message will lead to transformation.
