In the Old Testament, priests<\/strong> were divinely appointed men who served as mediators between God and the people of Israel<\/strong>. They performed their duties first in the Tabernacle (Mishkan)<\/strong> during Israel\u2019s wilderness journey (Exodus 28\u201329), and later in Solomon\u2019s Temple<\/strong> in Jerusalem (1 Kings 6).<\/p>\n Their core responsibilities included:<\/p>\n Offering sacrifices<\/strong> to atone for the sins of the people (Leviticus 16:15\u201317),<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Teaching the Law of God<\/strong> to the nation (Malachi 2:7),<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Maintaining ceremonial cleanliness<\/strong> and overseeing religious festivals (Leviticus 23).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n Only men from the tribe of Levi<\/strong>, specifically from the family of Aaron<\/strong>, were permitted to become priests (Exodus 28:1; Numbers 18:1\u20137). Other Levites served in support roles\u2014such as guarding the temple and assisting in worship\u2014but only Aaron\u2019s descendants could offer sacrifices<\/strong>.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd no man takes this honor to himself, but he who is called by God, just as Aaron was.\u201d \u2014 Hebrews 5:4 (NKJV)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Under the New Covenant, Jesus Christ is the ultimate and eternal High Priest<\/strong> (Hebrews 4:14\u201316). Instead, all believers in Christ now participate in a spiritual priesthood<\/strong>.<\/p>\n In the New Testament, pastors<\/strong> (Greek: poim\u0113n<\/em>, meaning shepherd<\/em>) are spiritual leaders<\/strong> given to the Church by Christ Himself. Their role is to shepherd, teach, equip, and care<\/strong> for the body of believers.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, Pastors are under-shepherds of Jesus, the Chief Shepherd<\/strong> (1 Peter 5:4). The prophecy in Ezekiel 34 stands as a solemn reminder that pastoral leadership is a sacred trust<\/strong>.<\/p>\n \u201cWoe to the shepherds of Israel who only take care of themselves!
