“And Pharaoh called Joseph’s name Zaphenath-paneah. And he gave him in marriage Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of On. So Joseph went out over the land of Egypt.”<\/em><\/p>\n The Bible tells us that after Joseph interpreted Pharaoh\u2019s dream and was elevated to second-in-command over Egypt, Pharaoh gave him a wife \u2014 Asenath<\/strong>, the daughter of Potiphera<\/strong>, a priest of On<\/strong>.<\/p>\n “On”<\/strong> was the ancient name for a major Egyptian city also known as Heliopolis<\/strong> (Greek for \u201cCity of the Sun\u201d). It was one of the most important religious centers in Egypt, especially for the worship of Ra<\/strong>, the Egyptian sun god<\/strong>. The priesthood of On was deeply involved in pagan sun worship<\/strong>, making Potiphera a high-ranking pagan priest<\/strong> \u2014 not a servant of the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.<\/p>\n No. Potiphera was not a priest of Yahweh<\/strong>, the God of Israel. Egypt at that time was steeped in polytheism<\/strong> and idolatry<\/strong>, and On was a central location for this. The Bible consistently condemns Egypt\u2019s spiritual practices:<\/p>\n Jeremiah 43:13 (ESV)<\/strong> \u2014 “He shall break the obelisks of Heliopolis, which is in the land of Egypt, and the temples of the gods of Egypt he shall burn with fire.”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n Joshua 24:14 (ESV)<\/strong> \u2014 “Now therefore fear the LORD and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD.”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n So, Potiphera was likely a devoted servant of Egypt\u2019s false gods<\/strong>, not a believer in the One True God.<\/p>\n This may seem surprising at first \u2014 Joseph, a faithful Hebrew, marrying into a pagan priestly family. However, this move was political<\/strong> and symbolic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Pharaoh gave Asenath to Joseph to elevate his status<\/strong> and integrate him into the Egyptian elite<\/strong>. In ancient cultures, marriage was often used to seal political favor and alliances. Marrying the daughter of a high priest would immediately associate Joseph with Egypt\u2019s religious and political elite<\/strong>.<\/p>\n This did not<\/strong> mean Pharaoh was trying to convert Joseph to Egyptian religion \u2014 he had already recognized Joseph\u2019s unique connection to the God of Heaven<\/strong>:<\/p>\n Genesis 41:38\u201339 (ESV)<\/strong> \u2014 “Can we find a man like this, in whom is the Spirit of God? … Since God has shown you all this, there is none so discerning and wise as you are.”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Despite being in a pagan environment and married to a woman from a pagan background, Joseph remained faithful to Yahweh<\/strong>. There\u2019s no evidence in Scripture that he ever compromised his faith or joined in Egyptian worship.<\/p>\n His continued reliance on God is seen throughout his leadership \u2014 from how he interprets dreams, to how he manages the famine, and how he names his children:<\/p>\n Genesis 41:51\u201352 (ESV)<\/strong> \u2014 His naming of his sons shows that his spiritual identity remained intact<\/strong>, even while living in and benefiting from a foreign culture.<\/p>\n Joseph\u2019s marriage to Asenath, a Gentile woman<\/strong>, foreshadows a profound truth in the New Testament:<\/p>\n Just as Joseph<\/strong>, the suffering and exalted servant, took a Gentile bride<\/strong> while exalted among the nations, so also Jesus Christ<\/strong>, the Suffering Servant and Risen Lord, takes for Himself a bride from the nations<\/strong> \u2014 the Church<\/strong>, made up of both Jews and Gentiles.<\/p>\n Ephesians 5:25\u201327 (ESV)<\/strong> \u2014 Joseph\u2019s story is full of Christological symbolism<\/strong>:<\/p>\n Rejected by his brothers \u2192 later exalted<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Falsely accused \u2192 remained righteous<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Became a savior to the world during famine \u2192 just as Christ is the Bread of Life<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Took a Gentile bride \u2192 as Christ takes the Church<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n This shows that God was already revealing His plan for the nations<\/strong> through the life of Joseph.<\/p>\n The Bible does not say much about Asenath\u2019s personal beliefs, but given that Joseph was deeply faithful, and given the spiritual heritage he passed to his children (Ephraim and Manasseh, who would become tribes of Israel), it is possible \u2014 even likely \u2014 that Asenath came to respect or even follow the God of Israel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Some Jewish and early Christian traditions even suggest that Asenath converted<\/strong>, though this is extra-biblical and speculative.<\/p>\n Potiphera<\/strong>, priest of On, was a pagan priest<\/strong>, not a follower of the God of Israel.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Joseph married Asenath<\/strong> as part of Pharaoh\u2019s plan to honor and integrate him into Egyptian society.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Joseph remained faithful<\/strong> to God and never compromised his faith.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n The marriage foreshadowed<\/strong> God\u2019s plan to bring Gentiles into His covenant family<\/strong>, fulfilled in Christ and the Church<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n Explore the full prophetic meaning of Joseph\u2019s life in light of the Gospel.<\/strong>\ud83d\udd0d Who Was Potiphera, Priest of On?<\/h3>\n
