{"id":56319,"date":"2019-04-18T09:45:48","date_gmt":"2019-04-18T06:45:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wingulamashahidi.org\/?p=56319"},"modified":"2025-09-24T14:21:45","modified_gmt":"2025-09-24T11:21:45","slug":"why-a-donkey-and-a-colt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wingulamashahidi.org\/en\/2019\/04\/18\/why-a-donkey-and-a-colt\/","title":{"rendered":"WHY A DONKEY AND A COLT?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>(Matthew 21:2\u20137)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When we read the Gospel of Matthew 21:2\u20137, we see Jesus giving a specific and somewhat curious instruction to His disciples:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cGo into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me.&#8221;<em>(Matthew 21:2, ESV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Jesus asked for <strong>two animals<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A <strong>donkey<\/strong>,<\/li>\n<li>And <strong>her colt (young donkey)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This was not without reason. Matthew even tells us it was a fulfillment of prophecy:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cSay to the daughter of Zion,<br \/>\n\u2018Behold, your king is coming to you,<br \/>\nhumble, and mounted on a donkey,<br \/>\non a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.\u2019\u201d<br \/>\n<em>(Matthew 21:5, ESV\u00a0 quoting Zechariah 9:9)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So Jesus rode <strong>on the colt<\/strong>, while the mother donkey walked beside them.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Why Do Mark and Luke Mention Only One Animal?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In <strong>Mark 11:2<\/strong> and <strong>Luke 19:30<\/strong>, only <strong>one animal<\/strong> is mentioned:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cGo into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here.\u201d<em>(Luke 19:30, NIV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Some may assume this is a contradiction. But in truth, it is not.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine two eyewitnesses to a car accident:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The first witness describes <strong>the impact<\/strong> in detail but doesn\u2019t mention <strong>the cause<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The second witness talks about <strong>a motorcycle that caused the driver to swerve<\/strong>, leading to the crash.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Both are telling the truth they are simply emphasizing <strong>different parts<\/strong> of the same event.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, <strong>Matthew gives us the full picture<\/strong>, while Mark and Luke focus <strong>only on the colt <\/strong>because that is the animal Jesus <strong>actually rode<\/strong>. But the presence of the mother donkey is important, too and it carries a deeper meaning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Colt and Its Mother<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Why did Jesus ask for <strong>both<\/strong> the colt and its mother?<\/p>\n<p>Because the colt was <strong>young and untrained <\/strong>Scripture says <strong>no one had ever ridden it<\/strong> before <em>(Luke 19:30)<\/em>. It had likely <strong>never been separated from its mother<\/strong>, and would have been <strong>anxious or incapable of walking alone<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In His mercy, Jesus did not isolate the colt. He <strong>allowed the mother to come alongside<\/strong>, to offer <strong>comfort, stability, and presence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This is a powerful image of <strong>discipleship<\/strong> and <strong>spiritual growth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Some of us feel <strong>too immature<\/strong>, <strong>too inexperienced<\/strong>, or <strong>too weak<\/strong> to serve the Lord. We see ourselves as colts never having been \u201cridden\u201d or used before. We think:<br \/>\n<em>\u201cSurely God would rather use someone stronger, wiser, or more mature.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But <strong>Jesus chooses the untrained<\/strong>. He calls the one <strong>no one else would have chosen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Why Not Use the Mother Donkey Instead?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We may wonder: <em>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t Jesus just ride the older, stronger donkey?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Because the <strong>focus of that moment<\/strong> was the <strong>young one <\/strong>just like <strong>you<\/strong> might be the focus now. The mother stood by, <strong>not in use, but in support<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus had already made His choice.<\/p>\n<p>The colt represents <strong>new vessels<\/strong>, <strong>young believers<\/strong>, or even those who feel <strong>spiritually unqualified<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe donkey (the mother) represents <strong>mentors<\/strong>, <strong>pastors<\/strong>, or <strong>spiritual leaders<\/strong> who walk beside them in support.<\/p>\n<p>The Lord is showing us something:<\/p>\n<p>He <strong>doesn&#8217;t need us to be &#8220;ready&#8221;<\/strong> in the world&#8217;s standards. He just wants us <strong>available<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>God Uses the Weak to Shame the Wise<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The message is clear:<\/p>\n<p>You may be <strong>young <\/strong>in age or in faith. You may feel <strong>inexperienced<\/strong>, <strong>untrained<\/strong>, and even <strong>unworthy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>But God is not limited by your ability.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;At that time Jesus declared, \u2018I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children.\u2019&#8221;<em>(Matthew 11:25, ESV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And again:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong.<em> &#8220;1Corinthians 1:27, ESV)&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong style=\"color: revert; font-size: revert;\">Don\u2019t Wait Until You Feel &#8220;Qualified&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many believers are waiting to reach a level of \u201cspiritual maturity\u201d before they serve:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cLet me finish Bible school first.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cMaybe after I become a pastor.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cMaybe when I know the whole Bible.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But Jesus is calling you <strong>now <\/strong>just as you are.<br \/>\nHe says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.<br \/>\nFor my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.&#8221;(<em>Matthew 11:29\u201330, ESV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Today is Palm Sunday\u00a0 Let the Colt Be You<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>On this very date <strong>April 14th<\/strong>, Christians around the world commemorate <strong>Palm Sunday <\/strong>the day Jesus entered Jerusalem riding that <strong>young colt<\/strong>. (Matthew 21, Mark 11)<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The crowd laid down their cloaks and waved palm branches shouting,<br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>(Matthew 21:9, ESV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That colt, once unknown and untrained, was suddenly walking on <strong>a red carpet of praise<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Let that be you.<\/p>\n<p>Tell the Lord:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHere I am, Lord. Use me. I may be young, weak, or unsure but I surrender myself to You.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You will never regret being used by God.<\/p>\n<p>There are only <strong>two kinds of riders<\/strong> in this life:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Jesus<\/strong>, whose burden is light, and<\/li>\n<li><strong>Satan<\/strong>, who enslaves and destroys.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If Jesus doesn&#8217;t ride you, the enemy will.<\/p>\n<p>So today, make your choice.<\/p>\n<p>Let the Lord put His gentle yoke on your life and carry His glory wherever He leads you.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;They brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it, and he sat on it.&#8221;<br \/>\n<em>(Mark 11:7, ESV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>May you be that colt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Humble. Chosen. Available.
